Given that it's technically illegal to renew a licence or photocard while you're not resident in the UK has anyone never the less done this?
Yes, DH did this about a year ago. He had his old-style paper-only licence converted to a paper-and-photocard one. It was a bit of a risk because the website does state that by law you have to be resident in the UK and that they "carry out checks" and we hadn't been living in the UK for some years by that time, but other people confirmed that they'd done similar things without any problems and so he went ahead anyway.
The whole thing was done online, you don't even have to send them a photo because they can copy it automatically from your passport file. The new licence was sent to DH's parents' house within about 10 days.
Thanks for your replies, someone at work told me to try showing my marriage certificate with the other docs and they might just pass it through so I shall try that, Queenbee would you email me your contact details incase it doesnt work out. I will come to you wherever you are my email is [email protected]. Thanks ladies posting for a spare D1 I thought was quite a longshot!!
I lost my photo card witin weeks of arriving here and managed to get a UAE licence with a letter that was issued by the DVLA although they did tell me that meant my UK licence was no longer valid. Given that it's technically illegal to renew a licence or photocard while you're not resident in the UK has anyone never the less done this? I do have an address in the UK that I could have it sent to. TIA
I have one :-) Well I have 2 or 3, picked a few up just incase we made mistakes on the forms. You are more than welcome to one. Let me know how to get hold of you.
I'm currently in the UK would you like me to bring one back for you or post it out early next week? i'm back in DXB at the end of August. If you'd like me to post drop me your po Box number.
Thanks VP and Edna, I checked and yes I am basically going to have to wait untill we get a visitor to bring one and be off the roads till it's all sorted, so annoying - but its my fault for not organising myself properly before moving
Checked earlier, and the DVLA website doesn't seem to allow direct downloading of the forms. You can use the site to have them posted to a physical address in the UK, though.
It makes sense, given that you're not supposed to be able to make any amendments to your driving licence if you're not currently residing in the UK.
You should be able to go online to the dvla and download an up to date form. Possibly may be able to complete and send it back to them with a credit card payment.
Its a long shot , bus has anyone got a blank D1 form lying around? Basically I need to tranfer my UK license to a UAE one now my Spouse Visa has come through but I unfortunately my UK license is in my Maiden name whereas all my other docs are in my married name.
I am going to try my luck and see if they will process it anyway by me showing the marriage certificate but something tells me it wont be that easy.
