Thinking of taking a 2 week trip to US next year possibly Feb / March, really want to take DS who will be 10 to NYC for maybe 5 / 6 days, what would you recommend from there on any recommendations on places to spend the last 8 days? split it up into 2 further city breaks somewhere??

Also, i have been to NYC from the UK whats the easiest way to get there from here?

For eight days you could get out to the West Coast to LA or San Diego, but it would be mean a time difference and some travel. There's plenty to do there. I agree with the Orlando idea if he's into theme parks. It is very easy to get from NYC to Orlando. Universal Studios has a big Harry Potter world now and I hear it is pretty amazing. If you would rather spend time at the beach, then the Florida Gulf Coast from Pensacola over to Destin is gorgeous, but it will be a bit cool for swimming at that time of the year. New Orleans has been mentioned. I lived in Louisiana for a long time, and while I love New Orleans, I wouldn't recommend it as an ideal spot for a kid unless he's really into food, music or historic architecture. There are few big kid-centric things--Audobon Zoo, the aquarium and swamp tours (these are outside the city)--and plenty of families go there, but we always found it more suitable for foodies and party-folk. Have a great time! edited by FrancieBrady on 21/04/2011

Yeah, I would suggest to head south. Jan/feb is just no fun in the north unless your skiing. :( sorry. There is a lot to do in NOLA in case its still an option, and Pensacola FL is only 1 hour away. DC will be fun but only for a short while and it will most likely be cold there too. Just some tidbits. Good luck.

I think I have different views on what a 10 year old would find fun because I was thinking LA/San Diego for theme parks, Alcatraz and everthing inbetween. I would have hated trapsing round city after city, museum after museum but then I seem to be the only one that has that opinion

February/March will be a little cool (probably still snowy) in Boston, but if you can handle that, going even further north to Maine/New Hampshire/Vermont is just beautiful. And depending where your son has lived the last 10 years, it might be terrain and weather he's never seen! I would recommend New Orleans (you're talking Mardi Gras time) but it may not be ideal for a 10 year old. He'd love the parades and it's such a great place for food and fun, but the public vomiting and public exposure might be more than you want to explain. If it's not Mardi Gras time, there shouldn't be any mayhem. What about a Caribbean cruise? And I definitely like the idea of DC as well.

What about going to Washington DC? This smithonian (sp) would be great for a 10 year old boy and all of the other momuments. You can spend a week alone at the smithonian. Take a tour of the white house. The weather may not be great so you have to see what it's like, there is also williamsburg, VA But if you can get a good flight I would fly from NYC to Colorado or Lake Tahoe and go skiing/snoboarding/snowmobiling/horseback riding for a long weekend. The mountians are beautiful and NYC is a great place to get direct flights.

If you are spending time on the East Coast, you have to - I highly recommend Boston, Maine and the surrounding areas, one of the best holidays I had was spent walking the yellow brick road trail across Boston! So much American history - brilliant!

How about Florida? You can visit the amusement parks in Orlando (Universal Studios, Disney World, Islands of Adventure, Sea World) I always go on Emirates 14 hrs straight flight from Dubai to NY. edited by LuLee on 19/04/2011
