Be warned Sleepy, this genealogy stuf is seriously addictive. I have been doing my husband's tree for about 4 years and have just written it up in a book for the family. Ancestry.co.uk, Findmypast,co.uk both good pay sites, freebmd.co.uk as already suggested. Also try familysearch.org as this sometimes gives results others don't - it's free. Cindi's list is also a good start point for references and genuki too. THe national archives also has an excellent website with loads of useful information and documents online. First though, pick the brains of your family, it's amazing what they can remeber - even an anecdote can set you on to a discovery. Once you find someone who did something interesting, just google them - helps if they have an unusual name - and you'll be amazed what pops up. If on the other hand, you come across lots of Smiths and Jones's it will be much harder! Ancestry has lots of family trees which are well worth a search and you can message the tree owners and often they will share photos and memories. I am constantly amazed by how generous people are with their knowledge. If you get stuck, post a message on here and hopefully one of us can help you, but just plugging away with wild cards on ancestry will get you there in the end. Good Luck - it's great fun.

Agree with all the websites listed. I also traced my father's family tree back to the 1500's and like Hello.Again.Kitty it was from finding a family member who had already researched it! It has been such an interesting journey with ancestors all over the world, currently my research is taking my mother's side of the family back to India! Good luck and if you need any help please ask. ETA I found www.genesreunited.com to be extremely helpful. edited by Jussie on 14/04/2011

ancestry.com is brilliant if you have anglo-saxon heritage (predominantly British, but also covers the USA and Australia) and you can also hit a jackpot and piggy-back off other peoples research if you have an ancestor in common. I managed to trace my father's line back to the 1500s through one such stroke of luck. It is a subscription-based service though, but they do do 14 day free trials, so as long as you're quick and you remember to cancel before the 14 days are up, you can have a great deal of fun. yeh my hubs has done a lot of this research i think he used the ancestory one. found loads of stuff

Sleepy One good free one is freebdm.org.uk - you can check on that for births deaths and marriages but like most websites will only give you the quarter of the year that the event happened - to get exact info you then have to order the certificate - I usually order them to be sent to UK address to coincide with visits home Start with all the info that you know and work backwards - a fascinating hobby I too subscribe to Ancestry and have found that very useful also check for family history societies in the geographical area that you are searching - if they are active they will have gathered lots of local information and you can often get help from them am also happy to help if I can just shout out

hi Unfortunately you have to subscribe and pay for most of the websites. The ones i use are www.ancestry.co.uk, www.findmypast.com, www.genesreunited.com and www.rootschat.com. They do have special offers at times so its worth checking. On most of them you can do so many free searches, and if you join Rootschat you will get loads of help. Its free, and you can find other people also researching the same names and also search by county. There are other free sites in the uk - but they tend to be specific to a county so you need to know where your family originated. Not sure how far back you have information but the latest census available in the UK is 1911 - if you can get back that far its easy. I have subscriptions to most of them and would be happy to help - its a major hobby of mine.
