First time I have a Landlord who is doing 3 times a year maintenance check up for the property by a company. So we had our first inspection and the lady asked me whether I switched off the water heater which were not used, like a guest room. I told her yes. She advised me to have all the heathers switched on even though we not use them, open the tap every month for 5 minutes, to avoid the legionella bacteria creeping in a water tank which cooled down and has still water. Her company is testing water for her clients and has found an alarming rise of the bacteria in dubai. She lives here already 30 years so I trust her comments, she knows mor than I do that's for sure.

I have never heard of this before but bit does make sense, however in the summer we use the cool water in our turned off hot water tanks to cool the cold (but very hot) water from outside. Not sure there is an answer to this one. edited by Cornish Pixie on 22/03/2011 I think if you use it every day it wouldn't be a problem, but if you go away during the summer I would put the heather back on and if I come back let it run for a very long time. Better safe than sorry after this piece of information.

I got giardia when we moved into our villa that hadnt been lived in for a while, from the tap water. Sitting there stagnant for a bit and boom! Last time i made ice cubes from tap water, thats for sure. It'll soon be time to be turning off the water heaters again.
