Wedding dress dilemma...

Afternoon ladies. I just wanted to get some thoughts on this....
I'm popping back home soon (UK) and with my wedding approaching next year, I know my Mum and MOH are going to be keen on visiting some bridal shops to try on dresses etc. Now, while I know it would make a nice fun day out, I'm wondering if it's actually worth it in term of getting a dress? From a 'more choice than Dubai' point of view, I'm guess yes. BUT, if I find 'The One' and it has to be ordered, I'm guessing that will involve fittings? (and therefore trips to the UK, which obviously does not make it feasible) In that case, do you think I should just focus on either finding a dress in Dubai, or getting something made here? TIA

Hi KB - Is Ekaterina and Maria one of the shops in Lamcy Plaza? Or is that another one? This is my plan of attack now - as Sunglow suggested - pop into some shops here and make a list of brands/names available. When I'm home, round up the troops (Mum and MOH) and only try on dresses on the list. (that way I feel I've involved them and get their opinions). Then when I get back to DXB, order chosen dress and have it altered as required. Ta da! Thanks ladies, I know it sounds a bit daft but this was starting to get me in a tizz! hahaaaa Next dilemma - I've fallen in love with an outdoor venue but were planning on October (ish). I think it might be too warm still. It's a bit of a gamble isn't it, weather wise. But November seems soooooo far away I can't wait that long!

Hi coffee mate, if you're getting married in Dubai then there is absolutely no reason to buy in the UK! There are some lovely, great value dresses here. Personally I would recommend buying off the peg and then having the dress fitted as that way you are less likely to be disappointed (a friend of mine had one made and unfortunately it was a disaster - she had to find a replacement 2 days before flying out to her wedding abroad). Having said that, I'm sure many brides have been pleased with their made-to-measure dresses. Why not check out Ekaterina and Maria - many of their styles are a bit middle eastern and OTT for my liking, but if you look carefully they have simpler western styles which are lovely and cost a fraction of what you would pay in the UK. My friend found her dress there and it cost her about AE1000! I bought a lovely full-length ballgown there for AED490. Let us know how you get on :-) KB x

Haha Coffeemate! Cant you tell it's a quiet time at work eh? ;-) I really did rate Ann. If she stocks one of the designers she will definitely get that dress in for you. I went in first at the end of April (got married end of July) and couldnt see anything and then she told me about a designer she was going to stock and I had actually seen 2 of theirs I liked and she had them coming in at the end of May...anyway, by that time I was really panicking in case I didnt like it but then I liked 3 that she had in!! I didnt actually get my actual dress until a month before having tried on the other sizes but she was able to order it in within a few weeks. Very reliable. Also what I did (as also didnt want to deprive anyone at home) was go into stores at home and try the ones I liked and knew were stocked here and then knew it could be ordered via Ann and all the 'technicalities' dealt with over here without the cost of flights etc. My dress worked out about the equivalent of 250gbp more buying it herebut was worth it in saved flights/convenience/time etc. Let me know how you get on and what you end up with! All very exciting!

Cheers Aussipup and tamieg1 - appreciate your input and opinions. I forgot to mention, I'm getting married in Dubai. So I guess that's even more reason to sort it out here! I just really wanted my mum to feel part of that whole daughter/dress shopping bit. I'm constantly sending her emails with pictures of dresses I like at the moment!

Hi Sunglow, you're becoming my best buddy on here! I will contact Ann Rashid when I get back. She did a great job for a very close friend of mine. Will also pop into her shop as I believe she stocks one designer that is on my short list (by that I mean I've seen a pic in a mag and I think Ann stocks that brand). The more I think of it, unless I can find something in the UK and walk out of the shop with it there and then, I don't think there is much point. (although I can't deprive my mum of the 'dress shopping trip' so will just have to play along in the shop!) Out of interest, how far in advance of your wedding did you contact Ann?

other option is to order one when you go home and only go back for 1 fitting 1 or so weeks before the wedding (depending on when you head back). I got mine in Oz and did this. I explained to the ladies that I don't live in Oz any more and that I will be back 2 weeks before the wedding. They were fantastic and booked me in 3 times (only ended up needing 2 fittings before the day) in the 2 weeks and blocked out time enough to do my dress for that reason. Having said that, I have seen some dresses here that now I almost wish I had waited and got from here because of the elegance of them is just stunning and so much cheaper to what I could afford in Oz. All the best!!

I think it depends on where you buy the dress from. Many bridal shops are affiliated with seamstresses/sewing rooms, and want you to have the fittings done by their preferred people, but some will let you take it as soon as it arrives. If you're getting married in the UK, it might be easier to buy it there, leave it there, and then get the adjustments done just before the wedding? Remember some dresses have up to a 6 month lead time, although most I found were around the 12 week mark, and my dress ended up only taking 8 weeks. Also some bridal shops can be funny about allowing you to take photos of the dresses (if you were to get an idea of what you wanted while trying them on and then get it recreated in Dubai), but it really depends on where you are. Good luck with the dress-hunting, I'm sure you'll have a great time!
