What to feed a baby sparrow?

We have a bird nest on our balcony which is a bit inaccessible. Two baby birds fell out of it today. We were quietly observing them hoping the mother bird will come for them since we didn't want to intervene. However by night fall one of the bird had died probably due to the heat or hunger so we took the other one in. Not sure what to feed it now and it wont open its mouth. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The vet said the baby dove needed soft and moist so he just mashed up tiny bit of bird food in water, still consistency of something between water and oil. Sad about them falling out of nest, maybe it's not positioned well? Perhaps worth a check if it is possible to access it.

thanks for the replies ladies. I tried giving it some water through a syringe. It did take a few drops. Finding contradicting info online about not feeding a baby bird bread or giving it water. DH did bring some canary food from the store but I didnt feed it to the brid since I though it needs something soft and moist? Some people mentioned egg yolks and softened up dog food so might try that in the morning. its gone to sleep in its box for now. Will try to feed it in the morning and hopefully able to return it to the nest. Two featherless baby birds fell out of the same nest a few months ago and now another dead baby bird on the balcony. These have feathers though. Fingers crossed this one will survive. I almost cried when I saw the dead bird. Wish i had done something sooner. edited by lilypad28 on 05/07/2014

I don't know how small the bird is...but u can mash some bread in water and keep that. As they are wild sparrows and can easily tolerate this heat...you don't really have to bring it inside. You can keep it in your balcony away from direct sunlight and perhaps the mommy might find her way 'round!! The other one probably died due to dehydration. So as Nayls85 said...u can make use of a small syringe.

I had an injured baby dove on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago (present from cat) Vet stitched it up and told me to keep it in shoebox with ripped up newspaper, balled up tissue so it can keep warm indoors and I fed it a water and bird food mix, just 1ml every few hours through a small syringe. Can you return it to nest?
