Actually, a great idea would be to have a sunbed with a padded face-hole on the angled section. You could incorporate a reading stand underneath to hold your book. There must be one out there....

Thanks ladies, some giggling there! A folded towel is a good option, I just find my head gets pushed back slightly or me neck gets sore and after a few minutes it's all so uncomfortable. Clearly a pillow or towel is the wrong way to go. You need to lower your head, not raise it. If you are on the beach, try digging a hole in the sand then place a small toilet seat on top. Place your face on the toilet seat and this will allow you to breathe whilst maintaining a straight spine. Your own portable massage table! What an amazing idea. I'll look out one of my many portable toilet seats and see if it will fit in my case. Or perhaps hand luggage. Just need to decide which colour and whether a 2" or 4" raise would be best. Seriously though, I was a committed stomach sleeper, but it gave me so many back problems in later life. I completely understand your pain.

I have visions of OP carrying a toilet seat down the beach :-)

How do you keep your head & neck from getting really uncomfortable? I could sleep on a washing line. I tend to fall asleep on my front whilst sunbathing My head and neck doesn't hurt thankfully You could put a towel as a pillow there
