When's it going to happen?

OK, so our neighbours are going to slaughter a cow by the looks of it. My kids think it's so cute and are feeding it! Last year I got a bit of a shock when I left the house to find the goats next door literally mid slaughter and I want to be sure NOT to have the kids with me when it happens to the cow.

My neighbours are lovely and entirely approachable but are not home right now and the maid seems unsure.

Can anyone enlighten me as to when the big event will happen please?

Dentro, I think being raised around it makes a difference. My father was the same but my sisters & I were horrified at the thought of how animals are killed. I suppose we grew up not wanting for food, clothing etc whereas Dad had to provide his own meals and kill his own meat. If you learn that early on and go without then of course you'd appreciate it more, that's just human nature! (FYI no I am not a vegetarian now, despite my horror at seeing how animals were killed when I was 8, but I only really think that killing for food is appropriate, not for sport etc)

Funny how today's kids think meat just produced by machines and appear on the supermarket' shelves. They would die in starving in the middle of a farm with cows, chicken, rabbits. When I was little my family was invited so many times in relatives and neighbors slaughterings, in my country it is mostly ****, sheep, goat. We, kids, found it part of life, never got scarred. We gave a last pet to the rabbits. It explained in practice how my food arrives to the table, maybe also made us appreciate food better and do not just throw away the leftover. Suddenly things that were normal became "dangerous" (like letting kids play two blocks down without escorts) "scarry" and "not suitable for kids". No judgement here, time will tell what is right practice.

Pretty sure they clarified the law after that poor sheep jumped off a building roof during a botched slaughter... :(

They did the slaughter here in the garden last year, so I was assuming the same thing would happen this year. Is the law new? I take it the consensus is tomorrow morning then? I can certainly go and ask them when I see that they are home, but wanted to get a heads up, so that the moment I choose to go over isn't THE moment! Also we can see into their garden from several; windows so want to keep the girls busy! <em>edited by Alicia on 04/11/2011</em>

well, you could go over and ask when they are doing the slaughter or if they are taking it to a legal abbatoire. I doubt they would be insulted.

usually the morning of the first day (never night). could be second day too but unlikely. Sorry...I didn't write all I was thinking. ;) I actually meant, in preparation for the first night so slaughter during the day. (is that right?)

Just in case they do plan on doing it at home...isn't it the first night of Eid?

I think this year people will have to take their sacrifices to abbatoirs to be slaughtered as the government said its unhygienic to do it themselves. http://www.khaleejtimes.com/displayarticle.asp?xfile=data/theuae/2011/November/theuae_November72.xml&section=theuae&col=

Do you mean in their garden? I don't think ts allowed to slaughter outside of the offical slaghterhouses any more. This GN articles states it is illegal and subject to arrest. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/abattoirs-brace-for-mass-cattle-slaughter-1.311385
