I've searched on EW but can't find any recommendations for whey powder.
I'm new to getting fit and have been told to have a whey Protien shake after weights.
Are all whey powders created equal?
Is there a brand you prefer, and where do you buy it?
TIA :)

Oh I am overweight too by about 7/8 kilos ! And most of the best diets and eating plans do urge folk to eat high quality proteins and cut down on carbs. So this is one of my protein 'meals' as I have quite a high carb diet generally. I have lost 9 kilos so far with this and a combination of other factors. Leaner muscle tissue burns up more energy so much better for weight management. Good luck

Hi sunlight. Since I dont eat red meat, have a low protein diet and lost a lot of lean muscle due to illness / stress etc, [i'>and [/i'>I never know what to eat for breakfast, [i'>and[/i'> tended to eat to many carby-type foods which made me slump late mornings; I was advised to eat a high quality protein shake for breakfast and it does keep me very full and satisfied. I needed the essential amino acids required to build muscle and keep bones healthy. I am allergic to casein. My favourite top draw product is a vegetarian version which is called KetoSlim but I cant get it here and they wont ship to UAE :-( That had a very high nutrition and protein content which supplemented my diet well. The ingredients on my Blue Bonnet box says "Undenatured whey protein isolate; natural vanilla flavour and stevia" hi hilsbils, it means I can not use. I am already a little fatty.

Whey Protein can technically be used by anyone, unless they have a dairy allergy. 100% whey protein is going to usually be a mixture of whey protein concentrate, a little whey protein isolate, and flavoring, sweetener, and binders such as xanthan gum. Occasionally you will see a bit of maltrodextrin added to vanilla varieties (so hard to formulate without due to caking) as well as coca processed with alkali--same reason. Whey Protein Isolate is absorbed a little faster than concentrate (Isopure--good example) and has slightly higher biological value than the concentrate/isolate mix. That is the only real benefit of an isolate over a concentrate/isolate mixture, aside from 2% more biological value per scoop. (you get 26g protein as opposed to 24g) regarding microfiltration, frankly, almost all whey proteins are! some are CFM (ceramic microfiltration) or hydrosolated isolates, and it is all about marketing. Every year someone swears they have the latest and greatest form. But the bottom line is this. There are about 3 major private labelers for protein in the US, and they service ALL brands. Hundreds of them! Glanbia is probably my top pick for quality, and they are like the Estee Lauder of whey protein manufacturers--they own just about every company you see on the shelf whether it is 'natural' or sports related. If you have slight sensitivity to dairy, then whey protein isolate is the best bet of all the blends. Avoid any blends with concentrate, sodium caseinate or casein. Don't buy into the ridiculousness that whey protein is for serious muscle building only--anyone can use this as an addition to your daily regimen. I could go on and on :) edited by Beebers on 06/06/2012 thanks Beebers :)

Hi I have just switched to Isopure as I am lactose intolerant. But should not be used as meal replacement, I always drink it before training and on days with no training whenever it suits me.

I use Evox although I'm not sure you get it here. I like the vanilla one, blended with water, dates, almonds and a banana. Yummy! I guess you know that Evox is far from natural it has the following ingredients Colloidal Silicone Dioxide, artifical flavours and colours, Xanthan gum, Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride and Acesulfame K Acesulfame K stimulates insulin secretion in a dose dependent fashion thereby possibly aggravating reactive hypoglycemia ("low blood sugar attacks"). Acesulfame K apparently produced lung tumors, breast tumors, rare types of tumors of other organs (such as the thymus gland), several forms of leukemia and chronic respiratory disease in several rodent studies, even when less than maximum doses were given. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, it was petitioned on August 29, l988 for a stay of approval by the FDA because of "significant doubt" about its safety.

I was recommended to use Blue Bonnets whey power by a homeopath who uses it too. Its one of the few that is "microfiltered" in order to isolate it, and has no bad ingredients it and is almost zero percent fat. I get it from the small health shop opposite Carrefour in MOE and also the large pharmacy next to Waitrose in Dubai Mall. Its a blue/purple white tub and worth talking to the folk in the folk in the shop as they are also very clued up. My homeopath friend mixes it with berries to make a smoothie but I just use nut milks or water. I was very careful in choosing because Im allergic to casein and lactose and yet feel that I need amino acids in my diet. Its always filled me up and I use it for breakfast.

Solgar Whey to Go (vanilla - haven't tasted the chocolate one) is another good powder, with no added sweeteners or artificial rubbish in it. I purchased mine from the nutrition shop attached to Life Pharmacy in Meadows village. Yes good natural one too, providing you don't have a soy allergy like me.

The main thing with whey proteins is to look for one that has not got anything more than whey protein isolate and natural flavours and sweeteners listed on the label. Most or nearly all of the brands avalable here contains other ingredients none of which are good for your health and in fact many are really bad. The only one I found that was totally natural was sold in Dr Nutrition centre, its got a picture of a glass of milk with a straw on it, cannot recall the exact name, but read the ingredients and you will see Whey Protein Isolate Natural Vanilla Stevia
