I know this is a years-old thread but I had to comment in case someone else stumbles upon it. Salt cod is a traditional Portuguese ingredient and should definitely not be cooked without first being soaked and the water changed a couple of times - unless it has already been pre-soaked. It's used in traditional recipes and is absolutely delicious so don't be put off it. Eating salt cold without soaking it would be the same as eating an unsoaked gammon! lol!

Thanks for the name of the fish delivery company, going to try them this week. I was just thinking I wish there was an alternative to going out 3x a week or more just for fresh fish. woo hoo! Wow Beebers you have been missing for a long time.. Welcome back:) I know I am totally off topic but hey just wanted to say welcome back... Hi Marroosh :) Cheers, nice to see you are still around! RE the thread, I ordered online from arabind this morning at 6, fish arrived at noon fresh and nicely packed. Sweet! P.S. I vote cream dorys. Got hooked on them 2 yrs ago here and still alive and kicking :)

Cream dory is wet and tasteless and I don't like the texture but good for making Asian fish cakes. Stopped buying cod as I bought some that was off and find it pretty tasteless here. Therefore I stick to salmon and tuna and red snapper for the BBQ or for steaming. Mackerel occasionally pan fried or BBQed. Very cheap and very healthy.

thank you! btw ive been researching about farmed and its not really to do with mercury - its what they get fed/given whilst they are farmed - think the same as a battery hen - antiboitics and other stuff :( For those that buy Sherri - is it nice on the bbq? not too many bones? And do you use foil or just straight on?

Alright, here goes. DH loves fish and these are the ones I remember: Blue Fish (also called Takwa) King fish Mullet (Biyah) Rabbit fish (Safi) I like the first two as well but my favorite is organic salmon.

I tend to buy tilapia, red snapper, and sherri. Every once in a while, I buy a new fish I'm not familiar and then make notes of taste, size of fish bones (my family don't like small bony fish), etc so I know for next time. This is a good website to find out which fish are sustainable locally: http://www.choosewisely.ae/ There is also a downloadable PDF with color photos of local fish with their common and local names: "http://www.choosewisely.ae/uae_consumer_guide.pdf" (the PDF link isn't displaying properly so you will have to cut and paste into your browser) edited by EllsBells on 31/05/2014

I don't buy white fish here for the reasons given, sewage, slimy or endangered etc, only buy organic salmon.

I buy sheri (I believe is a local fish also) and is not endangered. It is a white fish and delicious BBQed, baked, etc. I usually buy from the Deira Fish market and find it reasonably fresh. Also, you can bargain prices there.

I find that all of the supermarket white fish is slimy and kind of water logged, with a really fishy taste. The only nice white fish I've had here was freshly caught by a friend. Is the fish market stuff any better? Also, I spotted temporary signs to a fish market in Jumeirah recently but went back to look and they were gone. I haven't seen them since. Does anyone know what the story is with that?

Buying the Dubai local fish is a good idea as mercury levels here are not bad. Hammour, king fish, sea bass are great fish. FJ, Hammour is on the endangered list in the UAE as it has been over-fished so much. http://www.arabianbusiness.com/hammour-off-menu-at-some-uae-restaurants-489700.html

I'd also avoid Dory at all costs. The same fish is sold under the name Sutchi and Vietnamese catfish. It's farmed in Mekong river, one of the most polluted in the world and some reports say it could actually be harmful.

Don't know if this is the answer you want, but I normally go to Geant at Ibn Battuta and see what looks the nicest and the best value. Often pay more for a lovely piece of fish, but then make up for it when there are offers on :)

Hi, is cord easily available here in Dubai? Cord? do you mean cod You can get it but be careful to not buy the salted one I did. I put it in a fish pie and the salt overpowered everything. It tend to be frozen and then defrosted here. Choitrhams and c4 sell it You need to soak salted cod in water / milk before you use it. Thanks for the tip. I never knew that. I made Jamie Olivers Fish pie and nearly vomited it was that salted ;-)

There is a misunderstanding that farmed fish is not as good as open seas fish. In fact due to rising levels of mercury in the sea, farmed fish appear to be a better option nowadays. Buying the Dubai local fish is a good idea as mercury levels here are not bad. Hammour, king fish, sea bass are great fish.
