Thanks again. Does anyone else know of universities attended in the UK (or elsewhere) by kids having completed IB or A Levels in Dubai? It's up to the individual schools to release results and where leavers go, very few appear to do that here. A few name the handful of students who gained good grades and imply all sorts without actually publishing purified statistics. Other schools like DC actually show results and where leavers go. Statistics however as regards exam results can be quite obtuse leading the reader to a conclusion that may not actually be accurate. This is quite a trick used in the UK as well. Very few schools in the UK have a high Oxbridge rate, those schools are known to have a good relationship with Oxbridge and their students will have an advantage. edited by Sticky Wicket on 18/03/2011 This used to be the case SW, but not any more - possible still stands for Eton, harrow

I had a look at DC website and I was quite surprised to see that only one child went on to Oxford. It is not all about grades with Oxford - or any of the Universities come to that! I know excellent students from both DC and high level private UK schools ( eg with 5 A* in A levels) who have not been offered a place by Oxford or Cambridge - mind boggling...there is so much issue with $$$$$$$$ right now that Unis in the UK will pick and choose according to budget as well as other factors. Some students from here do get home status while others do not. It all varies from person to person and even from Uni to Uni. It is going to get even worse! So you need to be prepared - kids need to get the best grades they can, make appropriate choices and if they are a bit borderline, you may consider applying as an International Student as your chance of getting an offer are likely to be higher! It will hit your wallet though! @ OP surely it depends on your child's type of background and possibly your home country? I spoke to a friend the other day she said that Oxford don’t even take grades into consideration (most people applying would have achieved top grades) anymore as its so easy to pass A levels the results are meaningless. They go on the interview, whether they play an instrument and extracurricular pursuits A Uk student can attend an Oxbridge interview, with top GCSE & A level results, with the ability to speak other languages, have D OF E gold, play instruments, plus plus and still do not get accepted at Oxbridge. It is the overseas students who pay the full cost of the course who are 'winning' the places!

Of course, DC is a fantastic school. The school is proud of its results hence the transparency. Its a shame all schools in Dubai don’t do the same. Are all UK schools so transparent?

I know, spongemonkey. It's just that there's so much over-selling by some schools here that I thought it best to double-check (lol). Cheers again x You need to remember a lot of the *over - sold* schools have yet to produce a crop of IB students and results!

Ok checked the DC website and leavers destinations are more impressive than I had expected! [color=#000000'>By definition DC should have leavers going onto university more than any other school in the UAE especially from that crop of students. Will they be able to maintain their high academic results with the recent changes will be interesting to watch.[/color'> edited by Sticky Wicket on 18/03/2011

You see - we don't make it up! ;) Some of the statistics however have a creative side in the way they are presented.

I remember one year in our old school they gave the wrong entrance test (year 9 instead of year 7) instead of sitting the children again they guessed the grades. Some of the parents were really upset that their child had done so badly. They still got into the school but it just shows haw lax they are. Also I know children that have done external entrance tests for other schools and they’ve been in a class without a teacher calling their parents for answers to the questions on the test. Well that's one way to get a wrong answer for sure! :-P

Ah OK I did misunderstand you! I think 1st drafts are quite normal and without any shadow of a doubt a teacher/parents input is common at that point, but surely this must be the case for A level students course work too. edited by Cornish Pixie on 18/03/2011 Yes i suspect much course work.

Very little IB work is assessed by the schools, and as far as I know if it is it's moderated by IB examiners in Switzerland, orals are all recorded and moderated too. No idea tally-ho, I think the rules are made by the universities themselves! After going to the University Fair here my DD did not apply to Brighton as they would 100% have treated her as an overseas student, it might have helped that her brother was already studying as a home student in the UK. Work has to be submitted yes? Well that work can be re written can't it? I have never heard as much as a rumour that anyone re-wrote anything at DAA, if anyone could copy my DD's handwriting they'd be very gifted!! No CP you are missing the point, and not suggesting DAA by any means. Have heard and it should be noted heard that work can sometimes be corrected/looked at by a teacher and suggestions made for for the re written version as first draft too poor. Also heard of scertain subject areas where parents helped out a bit on course work! LOL

Not really, we had been here 4 years when she went to uni and previously to that were in Europe for years! No lying to them they just classed her as a home student! So her education has not been UAE based for her whole school life, explains a lot. Would love to do the statistics on this, exam results based on time attended in International schools etc for a true reflection of standards. She did go to International Schools from age 7, but in Germany and Belgium!!!

My daughter is a first yr student at Bath University. She did A levels at JC. She has friends that went to Kent, Bangor, Leeds, Stirling, St Andrews, Cardiff - all over the UK I guess and some went overseas.
