Kids have declared they would like to go camel riding today. This is a big win because usually they want to stay home on the weekends and it's a fight to get them out. So I want to do this and have it be successful without having to travel too far or pay too much money.

Found this old thread: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=137887

But it suggests the camels are only there during winter. Does anyone know if they are there this time of year or where I might go to get a short (ie not safari) camel ride any where else in town? Googling only gets me to companies doing safaris out in the desert.
Thanks all

If you're coming from Knowledge Village side .. You take the first right for JBR and instead of taking the natural left for the JBR walk .. go straight to the sandy parking next to the Le Royal Meridien .. The camels were there all evening yesterday

the bab al shams camel ride is less than 5 minutes, but you have to pay 400/ person for the dinner so not sure if this is good value. i do not really know any camel ride places, but heard big red has some, on hatta road, maybe call them. I don't mean at Al Hadheera, the desert restaurant, but if you go into the main part of the hotel and head towards the rooftop bar, they have the camels and falcons there every afternoon. They are on the sand just at the far end of the pool. It is a beautiful setting right on the edge of the desert.

Big Red is a quad bike rental complex along the hatta road. you just drive about 20 mins, and will see. it is close to fossil rock, and also that is the place where safari tour companies enter the sand so it is lined with souvenir shops and compressors to inflate the tyres. they always have a few animals there for the tourists, and i think you can also ride them.

Thanks everyone. Went down to JBR as it's close to home, but unfortunately not a camel to be seen. Whereabouts are they normally found around there? Will try again next weekend, or plan to go further afield. Dentro, what is "Big Red". Is that the big sand dune that people talk about?

You can go to Bab al Shams late afternoon and they have camels to ride and Falcons to hold etc. A sunset drink at the rooftop bar is lovely. No charge to ride the camels We always take our visitors and they love it. edited by plum2 on 24/09/2011 for bad spelling! edited by plum2 on 24/09/2011
