Hi Ladies,

Im 22 weeks, went to my doc today and found out i've gained too much weight...8 kgs since the starting of pregnancy to be precise......doctor is not happy with me :( she said in total i should be gaining only 11 kgs! She said i need to aim to gain only 0.5kg per week and she would be happy if i lose weight the next time i see her but she completely understands that it is next to impossible to do that.

My problem and main reason for weight gain is i am only eating carbs and totally off eating any kind of meat and am guilty in indulging in sweets and chocolates which have now been banned on me .:(

can any ladies out there suggest me healthy eating options now...im desperate....im not allowed carbs anymore and cant eat meat....im at a loss at what to eat now!!!!!

I am 34 weeks and have put on 10 kgs since the beginning and at my last doc appt was told I've put on too much weight 2.5 kgs in the last 2 weeks. Im now required to walk/exercise everyday and reduce carbs, ice cream, sweets, fried food. Which is hard but I guess worth it for a healthy delivery. My doc actually called me a balloon :(

I am 24 weeks and have gained 8 kg so far. My phone app tells me i have 'excessive weight gain' which i think is rather harsh considering i am tall and was healthy before pregnancy. Trying to walk 4 times a week but its so hot. I wouldnt worry, i know i have bad days when i eat too much choc etc but mostly am good, just got to keep being good and think this is what im feeding my baby etc. Dont stress too much, easier said than done ofcourse! good luck

right....adding to more confusion....reading up on GD diet....it says to limit milk too as it is high lactose...which is a simple sugar.....i thought drinking milk was healthy for the baby and me.....esp as a source of calcium!?!?!?! jeez why can't food be simple! :( A1984 here are a couple of links that answer your question. According to latest research milk isn't really the best source of calcium... You have leafy green vegetables, broccoli, soya products and beans, which make a better source. Also I heard from a few friends that at that point during their pregnancy, dairy gave them terrible heartburn, mainly in third trimester... http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/calcium-and-milk/ http://www.unh.edu/dining/nutrition/pdf/calcium-nondairy.pdf

Since you were a healthy weight when you got pregnant I think it's very odd that your doctor is telling you you can only gain 11kg throughout your entire pregnancy. I gained over 15kg (went from 58-ish to almost 75kg!) during my pregnancy and I lost 11, yes ELEVEN of those kilo's right after giving birth. Am back to my pre-pregnancy weight now 4 months postpartum. As long as you don't have GD your weight gain is really not that big a deal.

Oh yes MrsJT, labels can be so so misleading. My GD consultation about diet was such an eye opener. All home made and not off shelves was the mantra to maintain my diet. Juice, soup, stirs, baked veggies, grilled chicken ...but I cheated with greek yoghurt with honey though!

Time to start reading labels! It's amazing when you think you are eating healthily how much is actually sneaking in. Juice - i started on juice, but doctor complained - they add too much sugar, they might not be pasturised etc. So i try hard now to find freshly squeezed juice, no added sugar and limit it to 2-3 glasses a week.Pomegranate and beetroot are full of vitamin C. Lacnor juices seem to be best for no added sugar. But I think doctors would recommend you just eat the fruit instead. Yoghurt - Be careful with ANYTHING that says low fat - if you look at the label they are often higher in sugar / calories than full fat version. A little bit of fat is good for you, and supports your metabolism. I tend to go for Greek Yoghurt with fresh strawberries but again, in moderation (and with a teeny splodge of honey if i feel naughty). Try nuts (again a handful, not a packet), and swap white carbohydrates for more complex wholegrain ones - brown rice, wholemeal pasta and wholemeal bread. Get souping if you can, it's a great way to a) fill you up and b) include lots of veg. I add wheatgrass and Chia seeds for additional protein to my lunchtime soups, and drink them by the vat. The more you eat food that you prepare yourself the better for you. Quality of ingredients is important, and the only way you know that you are putting the right things into you and your baby, is to prepare it yourself. It's exhausting!

In moderation juice is fine...in my GD diet one small glass of orange juice was there. but not everyday...twice or thrice a week. Got to know dragon fruit is good to manage insulin, so got hooked on to having dragon fruit during my pregnancy. Even my family has sad background of diabetes so now even though am back to normal blood sugar, i have to monitor my carb intake and processed sugars.

Hi ladies, Thank you all so much for your replies....answering a few to put things into perspective. When i got pregnant i weighed 59 kgs (5 kgs more than my normal weight) I'm 5'4" in height - 162 cm. I had a healthy bmi of 23 at that time. When i saw my current doc at 16 weeks i weighed 61 kgs....when i saw her again at 22 weeks i weight 66.7 kgs....and i guess the biggest concern here was my family history of diabetes. I'm trying to be really good and careful....i'm really scared of getting GD :( I'm indulging more on fruit....less and less carbs (havent been able to cut back completely....i seem to crave 2 slices of bread in the morning :( I just hope i can get my weight gain under control. i'm ok with not losing any i guess but i dont wanna have to gain any more than necessary. one question...i eat activa 1% fat starwberry yogurt. are they ok to eat or should i try and avoid them too?? and what about freshly squeezed juices....i heard they can increase your sugar as well?? thanks for taking all the time out to reply. much appreciated. edited by A1984 on 19/05/2013

Please do take this wght gain alert to be serious esp if you were over wght to start with... I had lost 12 kgs when I conceived...with in week 22 I had put on 8 kgs back! Doc was furious asked me to take care and not put on any more than 10-12 for my entire pregnancy for fear of GD. I caved in to my cravings...by week 29 was diagnosed with GD, cudnt manage with GD diet so put on insulin. Delivered in March via c-section, struggling to loose wght now...whilst on insulin and VERY strict diet I didnt gain wght...just the last month of pregnancy put on wght...about 2 kgs...makign total wght gain during pregnancy as 14kgs.

Thank you for your advice ladies. It does make perfect sense to eat healthily. I guess i wont drive myself mad trying to loose any weight before i see my doc next but definately be more aware of what im putting in my body. Yearsssss of watching what i eat,for the first time in my life i let myself go happily indulging in what i want.....but that was short lived too :p Guess its healthy eating and watching for the rest of my life! *sigh* I dont think your weight gain is way over the top, but of course it all depends on what your starting weight was. If you are skinny then it would be fine, if you are obese then that would be to much. My previous pregnancy I put on about 30kgs because I took the eating for 2 quite literally. The putting on is easy, it is the getting rid of that is the hardest part, also dont believe all the myths about the kilos flying off when you breastfeed. I only started losing weight when I stopped breastfeeding. And than it took me another year to get back to my pre pregnancy weight in a slow and healthy fashion. Since I also indulge in the daily sugar and fat it wouldnt be fair to advice someone else to stop treating yourself to little sweets. However the days you do indulge, just do it early, when you are still burning calories, dont do it before u go to sleep. I have most of my sweets as a breakfast snack or with my lunch. I am now 24 weeks and I have put on 5 kilos eventhough I have my daily sinners treat. I do work out 2 times a week which is far from ideal, but at least it is better then nothing. Dont try to lose weight. Just try to stay a bit stable on this weight and keep a weight agenda for yourself so you can see when you gain and if it is connected to your calorie intake or if it is water retention.

i totally agree with Baslaef - quality is important, worry less about how much you're eating, and more about the nutritional value. But it is really hard! I thought i'd been really good, and far healthier than i was pre pregnancy, but when I had my 20 week scan i was also told by my doctor to rein in the snacks - even through i hadn't put any weight on in previous weigh ins but had put on 2kg in the last month (which i thought was OK at the 0.5kg per week). It seems like here they are very focused on us avoiding Gestational Diabetes, and not ending up with too much weight to lose at the end. I read the "what to eat when you're expecting book" and have been trying to stick to complex carbs (porridge and banana) for breakfast, soup (i bought an amazing Phillips soup maker) or salad for lunch and a healthy veg and chicken stir-fry for dinner or some wholemeal pasta. I don't really have a sweet tooth, but i have been *exhausted* throughout so when i'm at work and need a pick me up i've probably chosen biscuits rather than fruit more than i should have in the last month. But now when i want something sweet i'm having fruit or a yoghurt with a teeny bit of honey. Since the appointment i've made a special effort in buying fruit and nuts to snack on (i'm lazy and buy the pre-prepared tubs of fruit and dried fruit - i just won't eat it if i have to spend ages peeling and coring). Also walking the dogs every evening and seeing a personal trainer once a week. I totally feel for you - I felt horrible after that appointment - you feel weird enough about how your body is changing without someone telling you that you've put on too much weight. Focus on eating things that are good for you and baby, move around a little bit more, but keep everything in perspective - don't beat yourself up if you fancy a bit of chocolate, you're doing a great job the rest of the time growing a baby!

With my first pregnancy i put on 42, yes, 42 kilos. I went from 62 to 104. The moment my boy was born i lost approx 20kgs. The water retention i had was unbelivable, very painful too. With this pregnancy im at 37 weeks and i have been (roughly) following a gestational diabetes diet. No, i dont have GD but i know its a very healthy diet to follow. Eating only good carbs, very small amounts. Meals every 4 hours and snacks in between. This time around i have only put on 11kgs so far. I have been swimming and walking for the past 3 months as well. I have had many health issues with my first pregnancy but i survived, and my boy wasnt obese or anything.. Just eat healthy, if you crave things have a bite and savor it instead of eating the whole thing :) Theres a very good guide on baby2see website under pregnancy weight gain and it also explains BMI and how thats related to how much weight you "might" put on. Everyone and every pregnancy is different... http://www.baby2see.com/pregnancy_weight_calculator.html Hope ghis helps, good luck! :)

Tell your dr to chill out! First if all you should NOT try and lose weight between now and when you see her next, that is not good advice to give a pregnant woman. I gained 17 kg with my first pregnancy and around 13 kg with my second. Neither of my Drs were remotely concerned either time and both my babies were extremely healthy, as was I. I have struggled to lose the weight though and I did make an effort with my second pregnancy to eat less dairy as first time around I craved sweetened yoghurt and ate enormous amounts of it!! I would say though that you need to understand that whatever you eat, you are feeding to your baby. Are you happy to be feeding your baby junk food? Getting the right nutrients and avoiding filling your blood stream with artificial flavours, sweeteners and other chemicals is far more important than how much weight you gain. You also need to make sure you get a daily dose of sunlight so that your vitamin d levels remain high ; you can have blood tests done for your iron and vit d levels. I would say ditch the scales and focus on eating for your baby. I never felt like big dinners at night during my pregnancies so I tried to eat meat in the middle of the day and just have something light like eggs in the evening. Eat fruits instead of sweets, have chopped up crunchy veggies instead of chips and eat plenty of healthy fats like coconut and avocado to grow your baby's brain. Soups and broths might be an easier way to get veggies in if you are off heavy meals. You can indulge in the occasional treat but just remember to first eat all the good foods you need to help grow a strong, healthy baby and make good quality breast milk ( what you eat during your pregnancy is really important for this). Once you fill up on healthy food you will have less room for the junk and probably won't feel so tired and ill anyway. edited by kiwispiers on 18/05/2013

But see this as an opportunity to make a positive change in your life that will not only make you and your baby healthier but also will help you later on to go back to your pre-pregnancy weight :) Regarding carbs: there are good carbs and there are bad carbs. Just focus on the good ones, including whole grains and fruits and veggies. I am vegan, so basically my diet is meat free (and dairy free, but that's for another post) and have been indulging in healthy and tasty foods. I suggest you google "vegetarian diet for pregnant women" and you'll find lots of suggestions. The sweets are tricky, I know. It takes time but try and get used to having fruit for desert, sorbet instead of vanilla fudge ice cream and dark chocolate instead of Mars... And last of all, from what I researched online it seems that a woman with a healthy BMI can gain between 11-15 kg during pregnancy, so as long as you wont gain more then half a kilo per week from now on, you should be ok. Good luck!!
