Another baby?

We had a our baby girl through ICSI in February 2010 and was successful on the first go. The fertility issues we have were not rectified with this procedure - the sperm will still be lazy. One of my FSH levels came back at 11.8 and so we were told that we needed to have the treatment ASAP and that no further tests should be carried out in case the FSH level came back higher. We could not have had treatment if the level had been higher than 12.
My issue is that I would like another baby and wonder if it would be possible. I have heard of people who have had a baby through IVF then conceiving naturally and would love this to happen but I don't think it can.

I am wondering whether to pursue this further or whether I should be grateful for the little girl I have and just get on with it. I have not been in Dubai very long and am a bit lost on how the medical system works and the insurance works. I am from the UK and am used to going to my GP and then being referred to whichever specialist I need to see. My friends are lucky enough not to have had these kind of issues and so I have noone I can talk to.

I would be grateful for any advice. From what I have read there are quite a few ladies who have had IVF and been successful and so might be wondering about more children.

Hi Maplemimi, sorry to hear you lost your baby at 4 months. Lots of luck with the embryo transfer when you try it again. It would be lovely for you if just by chance you got pregnant naturally. I am trying not to lose hope but it is alll just so emotional and stressful. At the moment my husband and I are trying to come to a decision on whether we have treatment again now or later. I want to know if time is on my side or not as when we had our treatment I got the impression that we had to crack on. I don't want to miss out by leaving it too long. Good luck to you!

I also had my son through ICSI. he was born in september 09. i wanted to go back to my doctor for an embryo transfer last winter, so i called the clinic in the UK and they told me how the procedure works and everything. they also asked me for some blood tests, so i called my doctor here to book an appointment , and just a couple of days before i went in i found out i was pregnant!!! i was surprised and thrilled, never thought it can happen naturally. but i lost my baby after 4 months. i gave my body a rest and now im trying all over again. i am giving myself sometime before i go back for an embryo transfer. hope it works naturally. im not loosing hope.

thanks twinsmum. I think I need to pursue this further and will look at dgfc. I looked at the website for Dr Faikih and it says that one of the criteria for treatment (if we decide to do it again) is for the FSH to be below 10. My result could have been a fluke and not mean anything but it could mean everything. I read on another thread that you have had your twins through IVF and are pregnant with a third also through IVF - congratulations to you!! I think it is really helpful to be able to chat to other mums who have been through the same experience so thanks very much.

If your infertility wasn't 'unexplained', i.e. there was a definite cause for it which had to be treated then I'm afraid you're very unlikely to get pregnant naturally. The "I know someone who had IVF and then conceived naturally" line ranks right up there with "just relax and you'll get pregnant" in terms of irritating things people say to infertiles :\: There are some very good IVF doctors here but be warned that it's highly unlikely to be covered by your medical insurance so you may want to get some idea of the costs ahead of time. A full IVF cycle with meds is over AED20,000. I would suggest that you go and have an initial consultation with an IVF specialist to see what your options are and what the overall costs will be so that you can make an informed decision. We were with Dr Mohammed at DGFC who I can recommend highly! Dr Pankaj at Conceive in Sharjah is also very good and I hear lots of ladies on here recommend Dr Fakih - you may find his contact details if you do a search on here. While you are obviously very happy to have your daughter, you may ultimately feel that your family is incomplete as it stands. I really think you need more information before you can decide. Only you can make the decision as to your own personal circumstances and what is right for you and your family. Whatever you decide I wish you the very best of luck on your journey, I'm happy to chat if it will help.
