Hi Ladies,
Can anyone give further information on the process?
I have the birth certificate - do I need to have it attested before I apply for citizenship?
Do I apply for citizenship at Oud Metha or at the Consulate in Burjaman Business Tower?
How long will this take? I'm hoping to get to Australia in 8 weeks time...

Thank you so much!

Yes, you'll need to show the originals and bring photocopies with you. Basically you need to show them originals of all documents. The photos for the citizenship application can be taken by you and they are not particularly fussy on whether the baby has its head turned slightly or what colour the background is. BUT, for the passport, as you know Aussie authorities are particularly picky and you do have to follow guidelines - they are on the passport application form online. If you take the photos yourself, take your memory stick to the photo shop and get them adjusted so they are the right shape and size. They will print them out for you. You can apply for the passport here: https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/index.aspx

A couple of quick questions - When I go to lodge the citizenship by descent documentation for my LO, can I just give the photocopies of passports? Reason I ask, is I'm also trying to get onto my husband's visa so my passport might not be available (but I wanted to get started with the passport for my LO). Please advise if photocopies are ok and you were not asked for the original passports? Did you just take your own photos of your LO or do you need to get them professionally taken at a photo place? If taken yourself, did you submit the photos on a memory stick or print them out on photo paper?? What is the process please? Thanks.

Hi M, thank you so much for the info you gave. I went to VFS on Tuesday for DD's citizenship & was there for a total of 5 minutes.. it was almost too fast/easy to be true! As we can apply for citizenship without the birth certificates attested, we have done so, so once it's ready, we'll have to get them attested to apply for the passport... Dubes, we were married in Oz & my DH got our marriage certificate attested in Abu Dhabi at the Aust Embassy. We never had to send it back to Canberra.. not sure what he did but he said he had a few heated exchanges but somehow got it done... we needed it for me to transfer to his visa before the birth of our baby etc. We've not had any problems... yet!

Hi Dubes We actually got married in Greece so the process was a little different for us. But, I had to get the Greek certificate certified and attested which required stamps and signatures from DFAT and then it had to be sent to the UAE embassy in Canberra. I'm not sure whether you have to get it done or not - we did as ours was from o/s. good luck!

Hi M Thanks for all the info! Was very helpful! Quick question though...did you have to get your marriage certificate attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the state in Oz that you were married? I've been getting conflicting info as to whether we need to get it done!! thank you!! :-)

Hi - we recently had to go through this. You need to get the birth certificate from the government hospital (Al Baraha?). Once you have it, you have to apply for Aussie citizenship by descent. You do this by going to this website: http://www.vfs-au-gcc.com/ . Make an appointment at the visa centre (it's located near Healthcare City) and download the correct form. You'll need two photos of your LO which must be seen by an authority which is listed on the form. We got our paediatrician to do ours. He completed a section of the form and also signed the back of DD's photos. You then go to your appointment, hand in the documents (note they require copies of passports, marriage certificate, original birth certificate etc all explained on the form) and pay the amount. This all gets sent back to Oz and is returned to you with a citizenship certificate for your LO. It took about 10 days. Once you have the citizenship paper, you then need to apply for a passport. Go back to the same website and make the online application. Again, you need an appointment time but this time you have to ring them to make it. You bring all your paperwork with you, they review it and submit it. Once again, paperwork goes to Oz and a passport arrives within about 7 days. The office is in Burjaman Business Tower. The whole process took us just over two weeks. You must obtain the citizenship paper before you can get a passport.

Worst case you can ask if there's an appointment available earlier in Abu Dhabi. One year we had to travel in a hurry and realised DS's was just about to expire, we drove up there and made a day of it! <em>edited by Dan Lou on 19/09/2011</em>

Why not call the Consulate General? +971 4 5087 100 I always found them to be very helpful. ETA - get onto it immediately. Sometimes it can take weeks to get an appointment depending on how many applications they have then up to two weeks to get the passport back. <em>edited by Green-ish on 19/09/2011</em>

My daughter is 15 months old already, so I don't remember all the details. But from memory, I think the birth certificate was enough as it is. You need to go to the consulate at Burjuman Centre. Give them a call and they will tell you what you need and give you an appointment as you can not just walk in. You should be able to get everything done and passport in hand in time if you are travelling in 8 weeks. Hope this helps.
