So I started BLW with my 7month old DD and she has taken to it very well. For some odd reason she refuses a spoon or anything pureed! So I didnt really have a choice.

I was wondering if there is a group or meet up for moms who do BLW, for some ideas, support etc.
A lot of times when I tell people that I BLW, they look at me like im crazy! Think a lot of people have not heard of this and think that babies are suppose to only eat pureed food.

Thanks ladies.

Hi LJB2010 Just wondering if you knew when the BLW group would be meeting again? I have joined the facebook group but there doesn't seem to be any details about the next meeting. Maybe everyone is away for the summer. Thanks

There actually is a BLW group in Dubai. We started getting together about 8 months ago and our babies are a bit older now so more in the transitioning to plain old eating phase but Tanya set up a facebook group that is still active. I'd be happy to meet with people too when I'm back in Dubai at the end of august, but talk about small worlds I'm in provence now :-) The facebook group is called Baby-Led Weaning - Dubai, you just need to request to join.

Hi Insurance runs for 13 months here and registration for 12 months? I spoke to my insurers and they said provided you are insured you are covered in aaccident if your registration has expired however if you renew your registration 1 month late ( due to it ending after 12 months and your insurance covered for 13 months) then if stopped by the police and your registration has run out you will only get a 250AED fine... Hope this makes sense

that is YOUR blog beigy, funny I actually put my 2 cents in re purees not necessarily being PLW and my own take on BLW on your blog a while back. http://www.mummyinprovence.com/baby-led-weaning-blw/the-baby-lead-weaning-mindset. Emma Haha - small world eh? Yes, I am mummy in provence. I am still on EW a bit because my sister is Farasha202 and I was born in DXB and lived there for a long time ... I started my blog because I wanted to share what I found as a new mother who had no support especially abroad. Which is also why I started the global differences series of mums abroad sharing their experiences .... hahah ... nice to "meet" you again! such a small world, great blog BTW! :)

I had the same curious glances from strangers, even from family, but it worked so well for us, I highly recommend it. DD is now 19 months, never choked and is a confident eater.

BLW mummy here. DS was forced purees for 2 days when he hit 6 months.. then he refused to open his mouth. Then a lovely friend/doula I know introduced me to BLW.. havent looked back. He is now 25 months old, eats everything.. in fact he eats more veggies than me! :) DD 5 months is shortly going to be starting BLW in a month or so.. :) Edited to add: However, sometimes he does like to be fed, when he is too busy playing with his cousins or something.. but there is no forced eating.. if he wants to eat he will, if not, he wont. edited by shaf on 10/07/2011

I am not in Dubai but I could never find any support in France either which is why I go online for ideas and support - This is a useful site http://www.babyledweaningblog.com/blw-basics and I've also written a bit about it ... http://www.mummyinprovence.com/baby-led-weaning-blw/my-10-straight-up-tips-on-starting-baby-led-weaning-blw that is YOUR blog beigy, funny I actually put my 2 cents in re purees not necessarily being PLW and my own take on BLW on your blog a while back. http://www.mummyinprovence.com/baby-led-weaning-blw/the-baby-lead-weaning-mindset. I've yet to have my baby, but did buy a book on BLW (saw it on amazon and fanicied learning more and had famly due out so got it early). I really like the idea of it, but thought i'd be ok incorporating purees into it too! nyway, the book I got was The baby Led Weaning Cookbook by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett. Sorry can't offer any advice, but I have found the book really interesting and has encouraged me to look at weaning in a different light (when it comes around)!!

Baby-led weaning is based on the philosophy that we are giving purees and introducing solids far before baby is biologically ready and essentially interfering with the child's natural developmental stages of feeding themselves. By waiting until a child is ready, parents are encouraged to be led by their baby, basically including baby in the family meal and allowing them to experiment with "finger foods" from day one on their own terms. The term was coined by Gil Rapley who I think wrote a thesis on it but basically its what my mum did with us in the 70s basically when your child is crawling around putting things in their mouth and wanting to take what is on your plate they are ready for food :) I was 9 months old before I had anything besides BM and apparently my brother was 1). Spoon feeding them purees, which they "drink" does not allow them to earn how to move food to the back of their mouth nor learn to recognise "real" foods. I think the idea makes sound sense, and totally agree with letting your baby decide how much they eat, not coercing/rewarding or punishing them in relation to food etc. (so no "here comes the aeroplane, or tricking them by alternating spoons of sweet or savory) but I did find in my experience my son still preferred to be spoon or hand fed by me for the most part (although he does enjoy feeding me) and he had the complication of reflux so I applied a baby-led approach/philosophy to weaning, taking my baby's personality into account but not strict BLW as defined by Rapley. It has worked out well in that he has a very healthy enthusiasm for all foods , was only on smooth purees for about 2 weeks and has yet to spit anything out, I'm happy for him to end the meal and eat on his own terms. I do still think about what I giv ehim, and I did wait a few days when introducing any potential allergic or irritating foods to allow me to more easily notice them, and isolated certain foods to avoid in the process but many BLW proponents don't bother. Most 7 month old babies can easily eat finger food, but giving finger food in itself isn't necessarily BLW, it is in my mind more about the philosophy of the baby having a say in the process, much like BF on demand vs scheduled feeding. The downside perhaps is I am completely incapable of eating anything without my son expecting me to share, sometimes it would be nice to eat my breakfast in peace while he plays with Daddy ;)
