Can teething/cutting molars cause weight loss?

My DD has lost 300g in 3 weeks :( As it is, she is already on the *slender* side, so any weight loss shows easily! This week her eating has been horrendous - pushing the spoon away, clamping her mouth shut, refusing all her favorites, showing little or no interest in feeding herself, and just generally not having an appetite. I was okay with all of this, but had her weighed today and my "worry-meter" immediately shot up!

Has anybody experienced similar weight loss during teething, or could it be something else? She had a bout of throwing up 2/3 weeks ago, but that has stopped now.

Very concerned Mum, so any advice would be highly appreciated!

The men are keeping me totally busy! I must say that the little men are easier to handle, the big baby is the one that takes most of my time! LOL Teething can also make children fussy and cranky (especially molars) ... so it might be that. But LOs sometimes go through a phase of not eating well and then eating like little monsters! It might just be a phase. Dont worry about the weight loss too much unless it is associated with obvious issues like fever! They would pick up as fast as they lost it :) Atleast that's how DS has been. He's been just recovering from a severe attack of tonsilitis (thanks to DS1). And he lost 200 gms in 4 days! And gained them back in two days again! So that's where you have been hiding! Hope the running around has helped you shift the baby weight though ;) Tonsilitis has been doing its rounds, a friend had her baby hospitilized last week-end as he become dehydrated due to not wanting to eat or drink any solids or liquids for days :( Will monitor and go with my instincts! And the bacteria on the round is the infamous strep. DS1 had white patches all over his tonsils! Poor guy cried for 4 days whenever he ate / drank / swallowed his saliva, before he felt a bit better :( DS2 refused to even BF for 2 days :( ... and his bibs were always wet with drool as he could never swallow his saliva. Hard to see children suffer.

Hiccie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you and the men in your life doing!?! No - she has 8 teeth already, have not had any new teeth since she was 7/8 months old, so this is purely an assumption that the molars are coming through!? Feels hard and i have noticed, that when she does eat, prefers to eat only on one side... Infection is what i am really worried about!

Hiya plumie!! DS had severe loose motions and vomitting when he first started teething. So much so that he was almost dehydrated and he lost weight very rapidly. Is this DD's first teething experience? If yes, then weight loss shouldnt be of much concern. I have observed that DS is particularly fussy with food, when he is coming in for some kind of infection. Hope thats not the case with your DD. I hope the poor little bub feels better soon!

Just checked the charts, 9kg at 11 months puts her at between the 75th and the 50th, she is fine and will probably go back to 75th once she gets over the tummy bug. I bet your doc is using the old CDC charts. http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/Files/wellchild-growthcharts/$file/girls-weight-0-1-years.pdf Thank you for the link KS! DH and i actually did the calculation, so i think somewhere we mucked up :\: Just been in her room for 2hrs now...gave her Nurofen, milk (thinking she is hungry) but just frantic bouts of screaming :( DH is travelling and i think its going to be a long night, but will assess again in the morning before i decide to do anything further!

11months old. She was weighing 9.1kg before the throwing up and "no-eating" started, she now weighs 8.8kg! Have tried giving her the Ella's Kitchen smoothie straight from the pouch, she just pushes it out once i squeeze bit in her mouth! Does not eat yoghurt, but could try making a few fruit purees and pureeing her food down. There have been days where she has gone without eating a single thing for lunch and dinner...then wakes 1-2 times at night for milk as she is starving :/: ETA: she is now in the lower end of growth charts and in the 42 percentile for her height :( Has always been in the 75 and above percentile since birth! edited by plumie on 03/11/2011

how old is she, how much does she weigh total? If she was last weighed before the throwing up thing then I wouldn't worry at all, she'l be making up what she lost then. DS def loses interest in food when teething and we go right back to comfort foods like fruit purees, yoghurt etc. You can even try the purees in sachets, straight from the tube, Ds will inhale the whole thing in a few gulps. Give it a few weeks and see if her appetite and weight get back on track before you worry.
