thanks ladies. I'm in the UK at the moment for the next few weeks which is why I initially thought about buying a car seat here for Oz (we have a Maxi Cosi Pearl in Dubai). We bought the CARES safety harness for the plane coming over here and that worked fairly well so we'll probably just hire a car seat when we go to Oz at Xmas. Sparkly, thanks for the offer, we'll have a think about it - how much are u selling for? Last time we went to Oz we hired a seat which was fairly cheap (he was only tiny then so fit in the bassinet) so we might just do that again this time too now that we have the harness.

Hi Sydneygal I am from Oz, and I have a Safe n Sound convertible car seat (birth to 4 years) and I use it in Dubai. It was bought in Australia. I was thinking of getting a different one because as a rear facing seat the belts on the sides drive me bonkers when getting my LO in and out. If you are interested, I could sell it to you (it's only 5 months old). I just need some suggestions of what car seat to buy from here (having a compatible one for Aus is not an issue for us as we have one there already!). It is for use with the seatbelt, so suits the plane. Let me know ;) <em>edited by sparkly on 28/07/2012</em>

I know it doesn't help you with the plane, but babies R us in oz have their sale on and the carseats are quite a good deal, and about the same as hiring one, depending on how long you are staying. I'm ordering one online to leave at my mums for future trips. You could fly out without one and bring it back with you for future trips?

yeah buying or hiring a carseat in oz might be the best option. As far as using on the plane, ours was EU approved and not Aus, Qantas actually got their engineer to come on board and check it out, he wouldn't let us use it due to the design although he did comment it was actually a safer design than the Au specs. I got the feeling he would have approved a seat that fit the specs even if didn't have the logo on the back.

There is no carseat that you can buy in the UK and use in Australia. The UK uses the EU standard and Australia has their own unique standard. While some seats may look similar (or even identical) an EU/UK purchased seat will not have Australian approval and hence will be illegal to use in Australia. The Maxi Cosi capsule sold in the EU/UK/Dubai is not the same as the Australian Maxi Cosi capsule. The EU one was modified to meet the Australian standard and as a result actually performs badly in independent testing. The original EU one was brilliant in terms of safety. This is the same for boosters, capsules and forward facing seats. You can buy a fairly good, basic seat in Australia for about $120 for a baby seat and $90 for a booster. You can use any standard seat in Dubai!

Maxi cosi cabriofix is allowed only when used with the base and not the seatbelt.

Hi sydneygal, we had this problem as well when we took our 2 month old home in February. For example the maxicosi cabrio fix is not compliant with Aus standards and when my parents were asking at a baby shop the salesman said he had heard of customs / immigration taking car seats away from families if it did not have the "AS/NZS 1754 code" which is usually identified by the the Australian "5 Tick mark" on the seat. Also he said in the event of an accident insurance will not cover you. I recommend to look on some australian baby websites to see if there is anything that is compliant in the market here. Such as baby bunting, bubs or pram warehouse. I believe there are some maxicosi types that are compliant but not all.

thanks M....reynee, it's not so much for Emirates checking, it's more that we want to be able to use the seat in Oz so it has to be compliant....

Hi SG, we are travelling with our seat next month with Etihad. We gave them the seat model and fingers crossed it will be ok (we are not going to Oz though). NSW RTA has a page on their site that explains the new rules that were implemented in 2010: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/children/childrestraints/index.html Also, there is this website which lists approved seats and their ratings (according to Oz standards): http://www.crep.com.au/crep-results.php take care M

there is a rating on the back that tells you if its approved for NZ /Oz, its a real pain tbh because the requirements are really different and a lot of good seats don't pass although once you are on to booster seats its easier. Easiest might be to look online on australian websites and try and find the same models in the UK. To be allowed on a plane generally it has to be forward facing and able to be fastened using only a lap belt.
