The PrioriFix is a hefty old seat - something like 18kgs - and we were up to our luggage allowance without it! Our record is 92kgs without the stroller, though, so perhaps they thought we were travelling light and let us off? ;)

I've seen people take them in to the cabin, but I don't think all of them can actually be used on the airplane seats.

They will be in addition to the checked baggage. I just assumed that they would allow us to check in the car seat for free alongside our usual baggage seeing as it was a safety thing. Guess not :( What a pain! 2x 18kg car seats eating up all the baggage allowance.
that would explain why then - it's quite a hefty amount and they need to tally up the baggage weight. We took a car-seat boxed back to Dubai with us as luggage, but fortunately it is/was relatively light and we never get up to our limit anyway.
We brought the Maxi Cosi PrioriFix over on Emirates in April and it was checked in for free no problem, in its box as it was brand new. I explained it was the car seat and it wasn't included in our free baggage allowance.
that was our problem. They counted both as checked luggage and because my LO was in the bassinet he was only given one piece luggage and they for some reason counted the stroller as well.

Thanks Meals, so you didn't have to pay extra to check it in? DH is on the phone with them now, and the lady keeps saying we can take it in the cabin to use, or if we want to check it then we have to pay.
I know most airlines let you check in an infant car seat free of charge, does the same apply to the larger forward facing car seats or do you have to use up your checked baggage allowance?
