We are dealing with this also every now and then. I guess once they start with solids they tend to be a bit prone to constipation. What helps my daughter most is if I increase her water intake. A few pieces of peeled mashed pear (raw) also work wonders. Prunes, soaked over night in water help too. Give the soaking water to drink.
Feed soups instead of puree (just add more water to the veggies)
I heard about the olive oil added to the food but that never worked for us.
Tummy massage helps too: meassure three fingers width bellow the navel and massage with gentle pressure in a clockwise motion. Alternate with moving the legs in bycicle movement.
If he hasn't gone for a long time and is uncomfortable you can give a glycerin suppository, but ask your Dr first. My daughter's doctor also said I could give her Duphalac syrup to help her stay regular, but definately ask your doctor before starting anything like that. (We ended up not giving it to her, because she got better with the other things)
thanks ladies - thats so interesting about evian! i actually give him volvic - do you think that could be the cause?
have been adding apriocts and prunes to all his fruit (altho small quantities) will try flaxseed and olive oil. Also - any particular child probiotic you recommend?
Shibelle - the aptamil 3 is for 6months onwards....
Maybe the water isn't helping - it's because some brands have high mineral content (sodium, calcium etc) which are harder for a baby's system to process. Or something. My friend who uses mineral water buys the Arwa brand, apparently it has lower mineral content than most. Worth a try. I use Udo's Choice Infant Blend Probiotic powder - look for one which needs to be kept refrigerated as these are better quality.

help! my baby seems to always have hard stools and strains quite a bit while passing them. I have been giving him a little bit of prune puree (not much admittedly because im scared they are strong) and trying to up his fruit intake. water is a massive battle - hes not a big fan so now we are trying with droppers and all sorts. Last resort is a laxative as his doc recommended but im still resisting :( any ideas? he is on aptamil 3.
is aptamil 3 the same as aptajunior as DD is 2 1/2 and is on aptajunior 3.
if so, that could be the reason. for a 9 month old, i think you shud still go to aptamil 2 or even 1. i remember when DD was that age, she hates water. so what i do for liquids is to give really diluted juice, apple or orange. Don't worry, she's a great water drinker now. :D
Agree about Evian! We had to use it for safety while travelling and LO did hard bunny poops the whole trip! I use filtered boiled tap water at home. My LO has slightly low muscle tone which can result in constipation but I keep him regular/soft using a combo of things (never had to use commercial laxatives) which you may or may not have tried already:
- Add a few drops of apple juice to a bottle of plain water - my LO will spit water out once it's in his mouth for some reason, but with just a tiny bit of apple juice he'll take it. I know some people will disagree with me for this and insist on plain water but there you go, it works for us.
- Infant probiotic powder added to food every day
- Mix in some ground flaxseed daily to food
- Add a little virgin coconut oil to food now and then
- Steam some dried apricots with sultanas and puree, mix in with other foods (start with a teaspoon every day and see how you go, you can make a batch and freeze it, it will stay soft
- As a last resort, if you know LO is overdue for a BM, use a glycerin suppository to make it easier for him to pass
I have heard mothers with FF babies say that the constipation eased up a lot after baby turned one and they could swap formula for regular milks, so hopefully that'll be you and you don't have long to wait.
Hi Mols,
I experienced the same when DD was this age. Tried a lot to help her with no result until we went on vacation to my In-Laws. My mother-in-law advice me the add to her meals once they were warm a tea spoon of olive oil once or twice a day. After few days she had a massive stool (I could not believe my eyes ;) ) and she has been fine since. I kept on adding the olive oil only once a day until she was 1 year old.
Also, which water are you using for his bottles and drinking? I know that certain waters are constipating (Evian).
Hope this will help him. Good luck!
