DS is still going through his yelling at me in his highchair phase but at least he's eating a reasonable-ish meal in there. However, when he's had enough, he still takes the food from me but lobs it on the floor. That, or he puts both hands flat on the highchair table, waves them around and food goes flying everywhere. We have dogs, so I get that it's fun to feed the dogs (on the odd occasion they're allowed in the room when he's eating), but he does it at friends' houses and in cafes/restaurants too. He's one. Do they all do this and do they grow out of it?!

My little guy is 14 months and has been throwing food for months but there has definitely been an improvement lately. Still, very annoying!! He has the habit of taking a bite of something, chewing / tasting it, putting his whole hand in his mouth to retrieve it, inspecting it.... then either putting it back in his mouth or throwing it on the ground. But lately he has started to sometimes put teh rejected items back in his plate / bowl rather than throw it down so I am hoping this is a sign of things to come. Also, when faced with two choices he often throws the "loser" on the ground before eating the "winner". So in our case it doesn't mean that he is finished and I can't just end the meal when he starts throwing. I try to hover as closely as possible to improve my odds of intercepting any missiles and do my best not to react when he throws something, with limited success, other than that I have no wisdom and am just happy to hear that other little guys throw food as well!

Mine's 28 months and he still hasn't lost the fascination from watching our reaction (which we try not to give) and testing us. I'd actually prefer that he throws it than rubbing it all over his head!!! At least I can make him pick it up afterwards, but washing mashed potato out of hair is a royal pain! Watching for cues and threatening to take away his food is a good one, just make sure to follow through. Hope this phase passes soon for you!

..... and yes they all try to do, at least once. actually they try to do everything, and the number of times they do anything depends on our reaction towards it

I think even if your baby is still 1 year old he should know that some acts are not acceptable. He will understand, believe me they know when and how to tease and they keep stretching their limits since their first day. I think you should show him how angry you are, and if he can walk, make him collect as much food as he can off the floor. and if not give him a wet napkin and make him clean his high chair "but always keep the firm look on your face, show your dissatisfaction" Do that quick before he loses the link of what he is doing and the reason of it. I think you shouldn't let him feel that it is OK, one day he has to stop and he will be older, it will be harder since it was OK and now it is not "non-sense to him" .... but this is what I think!!!!

Yes... they all try, at least! I found the trick is to watch the cue and as soon as they have that pickle glint in their eye, they reach out to do mischief and hop, i[i'>ntervention[/i'> in the form of "oh, so you've finished! [removes plate'>! Does that work at a year old or do I need to wait till he's a bit bigger? This morning we also had the delightful trick of taking a piece, chewing it then spitting it out into hand and throwing it.

Our daughter also used to do it so not only boys, now that she is older, 20 months and understands more she has stopped doing it as much.

In my limited experience, boys do. Mine is 13 mo and throws everything - food, toys, my iPhone, EVERYTHING! I don't know that it gets better, but at least you're not alone.
