My LO has got some constipation. I cant change his formula/medication because its the only one hes doing so well for his reflux.

I've read you can give 1-2 oz of warm boiled water to your baby to help with constipation.

Is this true?

I thought babies could tolerate straight water at this age?

He is 4 weeks old.

I've also seen people here giving babies tea in a bottle! Surely that can't be good!! It's like mothers who give their babies food when they're three months old because they say that will make them "sleep better".

I always find this question (or rather the answers) fascinating. I've seen people in Europe give small babies (like under 3 months old) bottles of water (like 4 oz portions) and then in America, our pediatrician always told us not to give a baby under 6 months water. But then again, our kids never had constipation until they were eating foods, so prunes did the trick every time. We were always told that giving larger quantities of water wasn't necessarily about filling the stomach, but also overwhelming the system/kidneys, etc. And there is some doctor here in Dubai (can't remember which one) who told a friend of a friend to give the water every time after she was done breastfeeding. I thought that was strange too. Sorry I have no constructive information to give, this is just another one of those issues that reminds me that we all do things different ways, or come from places where things are done differently and we all turn out okay (for the most part)! Hope you can get things moving again soon... Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Babies don't even need water at all. They even tell mothers this at the government hospital here in Dubai. Rather than being beneficial, it could be detrimental.

BF babies should not be given water but FF sometimes need small amounts. The main risk with giving water is your baby not taking enough milk due to a full tummy, 2 oz seems a lot for a 4 week old. If you are giving water start with a very small amount and keep an eye on weight gain. Other risk is infection, so obviously boil the water first.

My DD also went through a bout of constipation when I moved her from breast milk to formula at 6 weeks old. I alternated between 10ml cool boiled water and a few drops of olive oil in her morning bottle. I did this from about 6 weeks to 8 weeks old and now she has regulated herself and goes every 3 days. Nice soft mash potato consistency :D As long as it is natural and given in moderation then it should be fine.

It is always good to give constipated babies sips of cool boiled water in between feeds, it really does help. I have a 20 month old, and a 2 month old. I always used to give my 20 month old water in between feeds, and I also give it to my 2 month old now. They have never been sick or ill from it. Hope this helps :-)
