Dubai cat The reason I would not wish to give too much information on this is because information on this subject could easily cause undue stress and panic as I have seen with people ( little information can be a dangerous thing) Research is ongoing and best to get it from your gyn and hopefully they are more up to date as in May 2011 up to date. I have not read the research indicating what the poster Cathy has written and I believe the figures written are extremely high but may be relevant to an area she comes from but do not believe those figure to be the norm world wide. There are so many factors that affect one with regards to pre eclampsia and every patient is different. If you delivered before 28 weeks the first time due to pre eclampsia will be different to if you delivered at 37 weeks. Rest and follow Doctors advice and stay healthy. I know, it feels like forever at the moment! McB, when you say it depends on what stage the pre-eclampsia developed, do you have any more information on this? I had high BP and protein from roughly halfway through my first pregnancy (I think), then around 34-35 weeks it got higher and worse until 36+6 when my test results deteriorated and I was induced. My understanding is the earlier and more severe you get it the more likely you'll get it again. In any 1st pregancy pre-eclampsia occurs about 1 in 14 pregnancies. If you had it once your risk increases, if its in your family if your over weight very young very old, diabetic, high BP, thrombophilias, all increase risk. Risk with my 2nd pregncy jumped to 50% I had DS1 at 30 weeks with severe sudden onset pre-eclampsia emergency c-section BP was about 210/120 when I went into hospita!! DS was 1kg After the pregnancy my BP was back to normal after a few weeks. Subsequently found I had a clotting problem. Pregnancy number 2 taking aspirin and clexane, my BP hovered around bordeline from about 27 weeks and i spent many hours in for monitoring then sent home again. The magic numbers for me was 140/90 but they were extra extra cautious because how quickly it went wrong the first time. Anway I managed to get to 38 weeks with no meds, iinduced while everything was fairly stable and DD was 2kg. Rest, stay calm and do as the Dr says, and now your past 36 weeks your little one should be fine.

Redrec Tangle How are you doing ? Dubai Cat , The best advice I can and should give is you need to get the most up to date information available from your specialists as it is changing as research is being carried out all the time all over the world.Thankfully specialists and midwives have been trained better in this field since 1991 in the UK with a massive push from the creation of APEC and spread around the world so your specialist should be in a position to give you the best current information. Keep well and listen to your body and your doctor .

Thank you to all. Yes I do realise I'm almost there and will do as doctor says. But still reading all your responses gives me hope because some of you have carried on to nearly full-term as well, even with hypertension. DubaiCat thanks for your kind offer! We were both a little too worried last night so DH popped out and bought a home kit to test BP, may have to take with me to next hospital visit to ensure both monitors are on the same page because I dont think the readings are correct for some reason! Are you pregnant as well right now? Yep, 13 weeks. I'm trying not to think too much about the pre-eclampsia - I made it to 37 weeks (just) last time and the thought of it all happening again is not fun :\:. I find the readings on the home one lower than the readings on the machine one at the clinic, but more on a par with the manual readings the nurse does at the clinic. Rest up!

I had high bp late in my pregnancy (usually low) but had to be induced in the end. At around 38 wks I also had protein in urine, and also high creatinine in my blood. At 40 wks it was higher again so was induced immediately. I was monitored overnight (after prostaglandin) and given oxytocin first thing next morning. My bp kept rising, and they urged me to get an epidural. I really didn't want an epidural, but when bp was over 150/105 I had to get the epidural. I felt no symptoms at all, no headaches, but they had lots of specialists checking on me thru labour. Also after the birth I had to stay in hospital longer, and get more bp/blood tests done. My baby also got tested for creatinine as this can affect their kidneys. Overall it turned out fine, but they didn't really exlain to me the dangers of high bp.

Hi RT, I agree with LT, it is great you have reached 37 weeks. Your little one will not be considered a preemie if born now or anytime before 40 weeks. I was 31 weeks when I had my first due to Preeclampsia but I didn't have a history of high BP. On the other hand, my sister who suffers from high BP outside pregnancy was on meds through out her pregnancy and ended up delivering at 34 weeks again due to Preeclampsia. So each case is different. Hoping you will have a safe and smooth delivery.

My BP was on the high side from around 20-ish weeks last time and I was induced due to pre-eclampsia at 37 weeks. I had protein in my urine from early on too, though. I can't remember the exact BP numbers but it was somewhere around 150/90. This time, it's been 154/71, 155/78 and 151/77 the last few times it's been checked and my doctor doesn't plan to do anything about it any time soon. For some reason, it shows up lower when the nurse checks it manually rather than on the machine :\:. I have a home BP monitor if you want to borrow it. I'm in Springs. ETA: I didn't start taking any medication to lower my BP until the day I was induced. edited by DubaiCat on 17/05/2011

It is a little on the high sde - but not execessive I went through most of my first pregnancy with high blood pressure in the 140/150 over 90/95 range - which was regarded by my doctoras borderline high so I didn't take any blood pressure medication medication However you can only get a true reading if you have rested for 20 minutes - so I kept being sent to the hospital and they made be rest for 20 minutes and then was sent home again The day it good really high was the day I gave birth - 160/110 - but I was 2 weeks overdue and delivered normally wow this is exactly my readings and gives me hope - but your doctors didnt even prescribe meds? I am guessing you didnt deliver in Dubai where doctors are prone to panic! Every case is individual what was right for PL may not be the same for you RT, follow yous Docs advice.

I had preeclampsia with both ds, born at 35 and 36 weeks respectively, both 7.2 pounds! C-section, not emergency but planned to ensure no emergency... As LT says, once past 37 weeks you can relax just watch your salt, take exercise in the mall or somewhere cool. Best of luck!

37 weeks..............listen, the next three are not critical to Bubs. Stop worrying, there are no prizes for delivering on 40 weeks to the day.............37 weeks barely counts as prem. Just monitor your symptoms......swollen ankles, headache........ call your obs or go straight to your delivery hospital.

Two readings. Both were high, taken an hour apart. The food was over a few nights the last week, went for rare dinner out on Thursday night, and yesterday is when the high BP was diagnosed. After the second reading she put me on meds. Thanks SW, putting feet up and hoping for the best. Yes make sure you do! Most of us ignore Docs or Midwives when they say rest and then regret it later! With my first my midwife called an ambulance and sent me to hospital because i should have rested and hadn't, i paid the price for not listening!

Ok - first thing, I am not a medical professional, so your dr's advise is more important than my experience. I had libel blood pressure in the 3rd trimester with DD. My OB got me to monitor my blood pressure at home, 3-4 times a day, and was to call if it went over 140 or 90.... It did a couple of times, and I just went in and got fully checked out. A couple of times had to spend the afternoon hooked up t o monitoring machines at american hospital monitoring DD and my blood pressure. At home blood pressure meters tend to measure high, so there was a bit of leeway with the 140 ad 90. I also had to watch my salt intake, get a bit of gentle exercise, make sure I didn't put on to much weight. I was induced at the end - at 39 weeks, but reall I had felt **** for so long- that was a relief!

You are both right, thanks for replying. I havent noticed any symptoms yet, baby is moving fine. I am just sad as can be now and a little paranoid too. May get a machine to have BP tested at home. I wonder how long before the inevitable happens, I feel I may get a week at most. DD1 was premature and I was really hoping things would go better this time around! Try not to worry and concentrate on the positive............at least you'll miss out on the huge beached whale last few weeks. BTW how many weeks are you?

It normally used to be around 110/82. I ordered a lot of take out last week, salty fast food, a very indulgent buffet. I think the diet may have triggered it off, or maybe it would have happened anyway. I was already on bed rest to avoid the complications I'd had with DD1. Resting now and letting EW entertain me. Are you saying a doc put you on meds based on one reading? My cardiologist can tell if i have been naughty and had a "bad" meal the night before a BP reading. Depends how close the 2 were...were they close?

I doubt the food would have spiked your BP to be honest, but just follow your doc instructions and rest up as much as you can for a bit.

Agree with below but what have been your normal readings? Is this a large spike? In which case it's a warning sign to slow down most probably and listen to your Doc! Make sure you rest up as much as you can for a bit.

Try and rest as much as possible to help stabilise your BP. As LT says go to your doc if any signs of high BP - frontal headaches, chest /abdo pain/ visual disturbances. Keep a note of how often the babay moves - if less than 10 movements a day then contact doc.

Be guided by your doc..........everyone wants to go full term, but high BP is an indicator of potential pre eclampsia. As long as your urine tests are clear of protein you should be ok, but take care........and if you develop a headache call him/her immediately.
