Novice, you sound well prepared ;) I think thats not a bad way to be (not having high expectations) as then your DS may actually surprise you and be better than you thought. Please let us know how he goes! We have all been there and no doubt will all be going through it again. Its not easy, but before we know it its all a distant memory! :D

Thanks for the tips ladies. Have been struggling to find any cheap or small toys here in Doha though.... everything seems to be huge, noisy and overpriced. Just like the ones we already have ;) Taking a small torch, roll of sticky tape, small cheap alarm clock, wallet stuffed with worthless cards & old receipts, maybe a balloon or two, lots of snacks (will take one of those snack holders, thanks for the tip), a couple of lift the flap books.. and hoping for the best. Sleepless night last night, keep thinking "OMG"! The upside is, my expectations are so low that DS is sure to exceed them (well, let's hope so!) ;) Good luck to all the others travelling soon!

A lot of people do use phenergan to sedate :) but apparently it makes some kids hyper :(

Some of these replies are genius!!! Loved the one suggesting the piece of string with all the toys on ;) It will also stop them becoming missiles, my last flight I spent the whole time apologising for the toys being launched across the aisle at some poor guy trying to sleep. I am travelling next week with me 20month old and will def be taking a trip to babyshop for small cheap toys. Also regardless of what toys you bring and how exciting they are, the kids in the bassinet next to you will always look better :) Maybe us mums should pull our toys on flights and rotate them on an hourly basis meaning they always have new interesting toys..... maybe we could rotate kids too heheheheheh I did however read "sedation" and get excited..... then read the rest of the post and had a word with my self that sedation would be totally wrong!! But I will have some nurofen in just in case of teething ;) I found that sitting on the floor putting things in and out of the pocket holding the in flight magazine kept my DD quiet for at least an hour. Also the little pack of stickers you get (wake me for food etc) also kept her amused, so much so I am taking a whole pack of handy manny stickers with me this flight. Good luck ladies and may the force be with you :)

Sedation would be my answer after flying with 15 month old DD on 8 hours flight! ;)) No, we did not sedate her; I bought set of new toys which did not interest her at all. All she wanted to do was talking to strangers on the plane and walking along the isle. This was a no no of course. We had a seat for her, but if it is any consolation she did not spend much time on it at all. The best toy ever was entertainment remote control (shaped like a phone reciever) and a little kit with socks and toothbrush given away by airlines. Head phones were also handy ;). Despite having a seat she slept on me (mind you I am 5 months pregnant). Just smile, seat back whenever possible and enjoy the flight. x

I just did this with my 15 mo a few weeks ago and a couple of things made it a little easier but do have someone waiting for you with a large glass of wine :-) The best thing were those little boxes of raisins that the kid has to pry out. My lo probably ate 10 of them during the trip. I also put animal cookies in one of those snack holders, fishing them out kept him occupied for awhile. I bought him the fisherprice laptop from elc for the trip and he enjoyed playing with that. To be honest no toy kept him occupied for more than 2-3 minutes at a time. There's not much you can do other than try to laugh and remember how happy you'll be to get there. Good luck!

Tip for the toys; take a long piece of rope and attach ALL toys to it. On the plane, attach the rope to the seat (you will go crazy picking up toys/trying to find them under the seats every 5 seconds for 11 hours!!!) ETA; buy loads of cheap small toys; new ones are much more exciting (will keep him busy longer) than his own 'old, boring' toys... edited by Bianca72 on 13/07/2011

Not that my DD is of the age your DS is, but I feel your pain! These long haul flights are horrible with babies/toddlers. My last couple of 14hr flights to home and back were horrific, so in future now we are breaking our flights up. No more direct flights to Oz for us, we are now going to go via Hong Kong all the time. We fly to Europe in a few weeks and the thought of a 6/7hr flight brings a smile to my face because even if its he11 its 7hrs less than the he11 we endured with our last flights. :D Good luck and hope your DS totally surprises you and is a dream ;)

oh and thinking about good lightweight toys, we took a little plastic mirror, hand puppets, a small plastic ball from his ball pit, a tambourine, basically little things because you have so much to carry as it is.

Consider an ipad or download some iphone apps for kids. Pack lots of snacks, food is a good entertainment, lots of little interesting toys, books. Be prepared that he will no doubt make noise as some point, but you don't need to be impressing the rest of the plane with your model child, just get though it and then delete that 11 hours from your memory forever. And then pity me, because its 20 hours for me to get home :( edited by kiwispiers on 13/07/2011

ach, I can only offer my sympathies really - I think that "active but not yet concentrating" stage is by far the worst! Snacks, bribes, telly... they're the only options really. I remember when DD was a teensy bit older than that, we actually bought another seat so that she would be off my lap (although still had to hold her during take-off/landing). Also, if you were to buy another seat, don't go for the bassinette space, because in the ones further back, kiddo can start watching telly as soon as they're seated, whereas in the bulkhead seats, the screen has to be stowed until the plane's in the air. Good luck! It's only a day! :\:

DS and I are flying 'home' to visit the grandparents in 2 days time. It's a long 11 hour daytime flight and he will not have his own seat. We have reserved a bassinet seat so at least will have a bit of extra space for what it's worth.... Basically, if I don't have an empty seat next to me (and even if I do), I don't know how we will survive the flight! Am terrified. And - great timing! - for the past couple of days he has suddenly been really impossible. Let me put it this way, he will not sit on my lap. Don't know how I will restrain him for takeoff never mind the rest of the flight. He is suddenly refusing to sit in his stroller and car seat and even on my hip (unless he is insisting on being on my hip, then it's different ;)). Manages to stand up in his stroller despite the seat belt so my arms will not be much of a challenge. He wants to walk but is still in that early walking phase where he stumbles around in circles like a drunk man, stopping to investigate every crack in the floor or whatever. If I hold his hand, he just diggs his heels in and tries to pull me where he wants to go like a puppy, he refuses to come with me. So, basically, his options are the stroller or the stroller. We tried shoes on him in a store yesterday and the minute he sensed the oportunity he was off & away, I had to go catch him outside the shop, he was so angry, screaming and kicking. Then I couldn't get him back into the stroller and the shop assistant helped me just to get us out of her store as the customers were staring. He insists on opening every tap and pressing every switch he sees, and playing with every mobile / purse / other inappropriate object or he screams and screams. I have basically no control over him other than giving him what he wants whenever possible. Distraction is not working at the moment. He isn't usually like this..!?! Please give me survival & packing tips for the long flight, I am desperate.
