Thanks M and Nams. Apparently they have put up their policy for pregnancy so it's now 5 x the policy amount, not 4. I said to my husband they can charge what they want as they know we will pay. It will still be cheaper than giving birth if there should be any complications (touch wood nothing happens) but I would rather be on the safe side.
Who knows the real reason, most likely that I was 32 weeks when I submitted my application. Although no problems, I'm not overweight, etc ,etc, there are no rules in the UAE which can be so frustrating. We just have to pay. As it includes physio, I might get an adjustment once a week for a year!!
Oh dear - what a rip off!
I'm 33 and hubby is 37. We paid 24K and I was 22 weeks along when I applied and paid. I had two pre-existing medical conditions which I had to supply medical reports for and why the premium was slight higher. But I am surprised they quoted you so much : (
Hi Nina,
The policy amount quoted to you does seem exorbitant.
I also got my insurance from ADNIC after getting pregnant (first baby). I am 30 years old and my husband is 31, and both of us are in good health (no pre-existing conditions, physically active and good BMI). The policy amount was 19K for my husband and me, and we got it at 16 weeks. It has been a good investment for us as all the doctors appointments have been covered after the policy kicked in, plus the delivery cost.
Good luck in making your decision. HTH
Wow seems all very expensive cheaper to buy a package at a hospital but like u say emergencies will cost a fortune.
Is it not an option to return home to give birth ? Are u from the uk? Good luck I'm due in September as well.
To M & CoffeeGal
I just received the quote from ADNIC for my insurance. It's AED 27,000 including my husband's cover (who doesn't need it but it is required for me to get the policy). Instead of 4 x policy cost, they have decided to quote 5 x policy cost. I am so annoyed. I am 35 yrs old and my husband 36 yrs old. We don't smoke, drink, exercise regularly, both in normal weight ratio and I haven't had one problem since becoming pregnant.
I was 32.5 weeks when we submitted the policy. Clearly they know I'm desperate for insurance so will pay the higher cost. I want to know at how many weeks were each of you and how much you paid if thats ok?

Re vaccinations see the thread http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=155636
NinaSimone, do you mean your employer did not insure you? If they were and they have just laid you off, the insurance needs to be kept on until your residency is cancelled. Also, as M says, they should have given you notice. I would fight it out so you avoid all the hassle of arranging a new policy last minute, especially in your condition.
TB, I am afraid company can cancel a medical insurance. I was under the same impression as you that when my as soon as termination was given and despite me working through a notice period, my insurance was cancelled. Court did not award reimbursement of medical costs. There is no logic :(

Hi NinaSimone
Not sure about vaccinations. DD had hers first lot done in hospital before discharge and I did not get a bill. The only thing that hasn't been covered so far by ADNIC was a hearing test for DD - this is optional and costs 500 dirhams.
FYI, ADNIC apparently doesn't cover epidural, just got a rejection letter today : ( Suggest you ask ADNIC to clarify everything in writing beforehand as I was under the impression epidural was covered.
Re govt health care card - yes, you do need a visa and I do not think any services are free for expats but perhaps someone else can shed some light on this.
: )
Hi M & CoffeeGal
Just letting you both know I submitted an application for ADNIC insurance on Saturday. The policy sounds good. My husband also had his mate look over it who is an insurance broker and he also said everything looks fine. Let's just hope the baby stays in there until at least the end of this week, giving time for ADNIC to complete our application and send the quote. I want to pay before the head starts poking out!
One thing ADNIC doesn't cover is vaccinations. M - did you just pay for these? What's the cost? Do they give babies vaccinations straight away or is it weeks later?
I have heard you can get a health care card for your baby and then go for free to different clinics. Can your baby have a healthcare card without a visa? Or do you need to get a visa and then apply for the card?
Hi NinaSimone
Yes, I'm online, you can email me: [email protected]
CoffeeGal is right - my husband had to join as well so the total was 24K for us. He has utilised the policy several times as well. I tried to dispute this several times as my husband also had his own cover and it wasn't until I visited the ADNIC office to pay that a helpful lady there told me that the only reason why hubby had to join was because ADNIC would otherwise lose money if the cover was for me only.
As far as I know, the policy does cover you for early delivery, I was not told otherwise and have checked the contract and there is no mention of this being excluded. The only thing it does not cover is elective c-section.
All the major hospitals in Dubai are covered, including Medcare.
The policy will cover you for a full year. Your baby will only be covered up to the moment of discharge from the hospital. Once you leave the hospital, your baby is no longer covered and you will need to have the baby added to the ADNIC policy ... at a fee. My advice here is to try to ensure that any medical treatment your baby may require is all done whilst you are still in hospital if at all possible.
We are going through this process of adding our DD to our policy right now. ADNIC requires a range of paperwork including the birth certificate, copies of your existing ADNIC membership cards and a passport photo of the baby (which you can take at home yourself and then email to them). The policy we have is the basic one - SHIFA Silver. If you wish to put your baby on your ADNIC policy, organise it as soon as you have your hands on the birth certificate : )
I spoke to ADNIC the other day because my DH's company has a 1 year waiting period for maternity cover and we're not eligible yet. ADNIC requires your DH to join as well and the rates are based on age (yours and his). In total I was quoted approximately 23,000 for maternity cover and that was on the basic Silver package with no dental benefits. They offer a Silver, Gold or Platinum package but the biggest difference in benefits is that Silver only covers for UAE. Since I don't plan on travelling during my due date, so no risk of delivering in another country, then we will opt for Silver package. Payment is upfront.
The toll free number for ADNIC is 800 8040. If you are younger your rates will be cheaper which is good news. They were helpful and sent an email with all of the detailed information immediately.
It does cover hospital stay. I believe that the policy is good for one year so should cover you after discharge but I don't think it will cover baby.
Hi M
Thanks so much for your further clarification. Do you have an email in case I would like to ask you further questions about the policy and you're not online. I will call ADNIC tomorrow but just in case.
A couple of other questions in the meantime if you don't mind -
* Does the 19K cover premature delivery?
* Does the 19k cover hospital stays in Dubai?
* Does the 19k cover me and baby after been dsicharged from hospital or is the policy only for the birth (whether premature, c-section or natural)?
* What is the name of the policy?
As I don't have any cover at the moment, if the 19k does cover me and baby from now, it is definitely worth it. A natural birth at Medcare is 10K and c-section 18K so the 19K will definitely outweigh the concerns if I should go early or any problems occur.
Hi there - sorry to hear about the lay-off : (
It was me who posted about the instant maternity cover with ADNIC. 19K is for those over 30 and everything is covered leading up to and including the delivery. If you go with ADNIC, your baby will be covered for any medical requirements up to the moment of discharge. Once discharged, you will need to get your baby on the policy. If your husband is working, I would suggest you could add your baby to his policy (if you are happy with the quality of the policy).
Whether or not to take out insurance with ADNIC is a decision to make once you have calculated the risks and benefits. Even though I was a low risk pregnancy, I had complications during and post delivery. The fees associated with my medical care were all taken care of by ADNIC and outweighed the cost of joining. If anything should go wrong with your baby, I have heard NICU costs can be very high - I know of one couple who were 100K out of pocket. Sorry, don't mean to scare you but you have to be realistic and careful about these things. Assuming nothing goes wrong, why don't you calculate the cost of a standard delivery and the antenatal visits you will have leading up to delivery? It might be close to 19K. Also, if your doc suggests you might deliver early, it might be best if you do go ahead with ADNIC?
On another note, how much notice is your employer required to give you? Have you checked whether or not they are obligated to continue your insurance through your notice period?
Good luck : )
I have to start the process next week of moving my visa from my company to my husband. However, my husband's medical insurance does not cover maternity.
I'm due in mid Sept but my doctor thinks I may go much earlier (like in the next couple of weeks). I am going through Medcare Clinic but Medcare Hospital don't accept you until 34 weeks (I'm 33 weeks tomorrow).
I read in a past thread that another woman got health insurance through Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company. AED 19,000 and no waiting period.
Can anyone please shed light on what I should do? I don't want to have a premature baby and be left with hundreds of thousands of dirhams in debt.
Any advice, help on insurance would be much appreciated.
