Does anyone have infant gaviscon they're willing to sell me? Or can pick me up some from the UK?? Paed prescribed it today but City Hospital is out of stock.

A homeopathic version is just to add a tsp of sugar to about an ounce of water.. helps with gas, constipation.

you can get zantac in suspension vs in alcohol which tastes much milder. And make sure you are not feeding it throug a bottle teat, I did that for almost 2 weeks before I realised that all the zantac was staying in the teat and just the water was going through the hole! I have a friend who did the same thing so I'm not the only moron out there. Gaviscon basically makes a raft on the top of the milk which blocks it from rising vs thickeners but works on the same principle I guess. I never found it very helpful. Cows milk intolerance seems to be a common cause of reflux, so much so that if I was formula-feeding, I would seriously consider trialling neocate as it seems the logical starting point to work backwards from. I tried a dairy free diet as was EBFing but it didn't make a difference although certain foods in my diet (wheat/oats) did seem to make it worse. For the most part my son was a happy spitter, and despite enormous amounts of vomit his weight gain was fine, so we didn't medicate. My daughter also has reflux and we don't medicate although I have considered it as she seems in more discomfort at times than my son ever did. Most babies (refluxers and non refluxers alike) have a fussiness peak at around 6 weeks and are much more settled by 10 weeks, regardless of medicines and feeding methods, something to keep in mind while you are trying to figure this out.

DCC, sorry for being MIA. Thanks again for offering up your Gaviscon. I hate using it as we're EBF so giving it via syringe after a feed which is a pain. He's also on Zantac which I don't see making any difference. At what point did you switch to Nexium? His paed says that's the next step but I don't know whether to go in now or wait until his 2 month appt (on the 25th). How is the taste of Nexium? The Zantac is like gasoline and makes him gag and sometimes vomit (which he doesn't do with other meds). Try the gaviscon before the feed first so it can settle in his tummy for the feed. Zantac is disgusting but Nexium is not. I feed it to him via a droppler. I find medicine always comes out too quickly from a syringe. DS was on Nexium from 2 months old. Hope this helps.

My daughter had infant gaviscon, when she was on her feeding tube. It made the feed flow 3 times slower than it did before. It really thickened up the milk as soon as it was mixed. At the hospital they only put it in a bit of her feed so it didn't take so long and they gave her a bigger feeding tube, so I really think you would need to use a bigger teat. I hope that helps!

Oh my, DCC how did you manage during that time? It must have been awful for you? Thankfully for both of you, he is doing better now. I would be grateful for the Gaviscon if that would be ok? I didnt know it was a milk thickener - do you need to change the bottle teat to allow for the thickened milk? Hi Mmmmm no it thickens in the tummy so you should be ok. Some people also give the gaviscon on its own before actually feeding milk as it settles in the tummy for the milk. Contact me [email protected] and we can arrange for the gaviscon for your LO!

We now have a settled LO after many months of struggling and trying to manage his reflux. In the end we took our LO to Infinity Clinic. The Ped's there are fantastic and were very understanding of what LO is going through. Like many others Zantac did nothing for our LO and he hated the taste of it. We also tried Motillium which wasnt much use to us. Infant Gaviscon is really just a milk thickener so it should help settle the milk in his tummy but that also didnt help LO. I have tonnes of sachets to give away if anyone wants them. He was then put on Nexium 10mg in the morning and 10mg in the evening and within 7 days we noticed such a MASSIVE difference. Our LO spent ALOT of time in hospital on IV's for hydration and to be monitored but nobody was really able to help us but the guys at Infinity Clinic. He would scream at every feed, if he eventually drank he would vomit it back and the entire day would be both me and LO in tears. I know many people dont like to medicate their LO's but finally seeing a smile on our LO's face and him having his milk again was enough for us to go down this route. We also tried 20mg in one dose but spreading it has been much much better. For those who have LO's really struggling with their reflux I'd highly recommend this drug. After some time the nexium also ended up not being enough but this was more so because he had a milk protein allergy. Hes now on neocate. This was identified by doing a simple stool sample test and hes now doing much better.

That would be fantastic! Thank you SO much! LO is projectile vomiting so I'm pretty desperate, especially since he can't seem to keep his Zantac prescription down either. edited by FloridaGirl on 09/01/2013
