Dr. put me on Metformin last Wednesday for PCOS the day my period was due. 7 days later still no period! BFN twice too!
My cycles are usually bang on 34/35 days. Can Metformin make my period late the first month in taking it?

Well got my period yesterday heartbroken and p***** off that the Metformin made me late and gave me false hopes :-( Maybe I should wait until after Christmas to try again so I can drown my sorrows in Ireland with my first Christmas back home for 6 years :-) :( I'm so sorry. I did that a couple of years ago. We'd just been prescribed Clomid thanks to a couple of hormone issues, so I figure I'd crack on with my health kick, lose the last couple of kilos, tone up and then go wild in Edinburgh over the festive season before starting the Clomid in January. Instead I spent the festive season looking like roadkill with my head down the loo in my first trimester. Maybe taking the pressure off myself was the nudge my body needed? I don't know. I'm really not sure about the charting if you're on Metformin. I really must get my book back so I can look these things up! Is your doctor supportive of charting? If so it might be worth a chat with him or her.

I normally got my period every 35-36 days before I started metformin. I think metformin should make your periods more regular and shouldn't delay it. Also, diet and stress from knowing you're starting this medication could have delayed your period. After I started metformin my period started coming around 31-32 days and I was ovulating every month. Even though my periods became more regular you may have months where you will be late again. I went on holiday in July and when I came back I didn't get my period for 46 days. I was really frustrated but just had to be positive and hope my period would be more normal during the next cycle. Turns out I didn't get my period next cycle and I'm now 7 weeks pregnant! So you just never know with your periods... Also I would always take a pregnancy test every month and get a BFN and it would just stress me out. You really need to listen to your body. I felt pregnant even before I took a test and could just tell from the way my breast looked and I ALWAYS had a headache. Good luck Pricey and hope you get a BFP soon. :) edited by Sal 123 on 10/10/2011

I have just seen Dr Heather Eade at the Dubai Mall Medical Centre and she was fantastic - my cycles are all irregular and although I'm not on Metformin, she has prescribed supplements which will help them regulate - an imbalance of hormones. I was told last year that I have poly cystic ovaries (and at the time insulin resistance which has been retested just recently and now I don't) and was put on Metformin but it made me sick. I guess what I am saying is get a second opinion - I understand Dr Eade has great success with treating people who are wanting to get pregnant. edited by Kakariki on 06/10/2011

I am waiting from a response from my doctor as I don't know what the point of taking it if it is causing this. DH is due to get checked on the 24th and then we will take it from there. Metmorfin feels like such a strong drug too I feel sick, tired and have lost quite a bit of weight in just 1 week. I want it be good if it makes me feel bad!! Is there any point in charting while this is going on do you think?

You're most welcome. There's nothing worse than a late period when you're TTC and you're still getting BFNs! Did you talk to your doctor to ask if this could happen? The friend I spoke to (she's now doing IVF as it turns out the main issue is with her DH not her) said her doctor never gave her the full story and she'd always end up calling him afterwards to ask a million more questions. She's been through about three doctors now and they're all the same :(.

I just asked a friend overseas who tried Metformin a while back. She said the first couple of cycles of taking it, her period was late one month and early the next. She didn't have particularly regular cycles before taking it, though :( and her doctor said many of her cycles she didn't actually ovulate.

I was on metformin for both of my 'attempts' to get pregnant. Never had a period for either and fell within 4 months the first time and 8 months the second time! Wow congratulations!! So you never had a period the whole time and still ovulating?! I learn something new everyday. Did you have normal cycles before taking Metformin?

Hmmm. As far as I was aware, only the first half of your cycle - the follicular phase - can be affected by external factors such as medication (unless you're on a controlled cycle, i.e. IVF). But I didn't look into Metformin as it turned out I didn't actually have proper PCOS. Do you know when you ovulated? And how long your luteal phase is? I haven't started to chart yet so I am not too sure. All I know is I have a 34/35 day cycle.
