Migraines and contraception...??

I have tried recently to go back on the pill (combined: Marvelon) and made the decision today it's just not worth it for me! I remember coming off it to get pregnant and being rather off balance for a bit and thinking I wouldn't likely go back on it ever again. However after I had my baby and started getting back to normal I relented because it seemed to be the easy option. (I didn't fancy the IUD and hadn't read great things about implants either).

But after suffering from crippling migraines and not feeling like myself at all (so down and all over the place plus SUPER anxious) I'm stopping today. Which leads me to ask if anyone else suffers from migraines and what they do with regards contraception. For example is anyone just happy to rely on condoms? I feel SO against messing with my hormones any more! I'd really appreciate anyone else's feedback!

Thanks...

I shall spk to my doctor about the IUD perhaps but for now it's good to know someone else is just relying on good old condoms! Thanks...

Hi Pav, I'm in a similar situation as you. For years I struggled with debilitating monthly migraines in spite of trying various pill options. I then stopped the pill in June 2009 (as we were TTC) and have only had about 3 migraines since. DD is now nearly 7 months old and we're still using condoms as I can't bear the thought of putting myself through that monthly misery again especially as I now have a baby to take care of plus I'm back at work. The option of chucking up and spending 48 hours in bed in a dark room every month just doesn't exist anymore... Crikey, the thought of leaving DH alone to cope with DD gives me chills ;)

Thanks for your patience HAK! At the tender age of 37 that's one thing that's a little clearer now lol! BM - I have actually though about the copper IUD option but I have always found internal examinations very very painful (more painful than a fair amount of my contractions when I was in labour unbelievably) so I am reticent to try it. Have you tried it yourself out of interest?

At the risk of sounding like a complete twit, the cycle begins from the first day of the period - is that right?! So one and two weeks after that, I should use condoms? Sounding SO ignorant here I know!! I guess this may give some readers a laugh any way! hehe - such is the mystery of life! Yes, your cycle starts on the 1st day of your period, so if you're on a 28 day cycle, so you should ovulate around the 14th day (but it's not exact) and the egg hangs around for a few days before it gets bored and triggers the process of breaking down the womb's lining and expelling it in the form of your period. Sperm also lives for a few days, so the best thing is to be "careful" for 4 days before you ovulate and maybe 5 or 6 afterwards, but since you can't tell exactly when you're going to (unless you chart your temperatures) then it's best to be "careful" in the week running up and the week after.

I've been reading this board for some time now and I've read lots of negative comments about Cerazette. So now am just a bit scared to take anything and for now, would like to find out what 'normal' feels like! I think if I go on another bender with hormones my husband might disown me! Anybody just using condoms?! I know how you feel! I'm fed up to the back teeth of pumping myself full of hormones for years and years... and years to come, but DH isn't [currently'> prepared to contemplate his main option! If you want to go down alternative routes, you only need to use condoms for a week or two surrounding the middle of your cycle (to play really safe!). A friend successfully used the withdrawal method for years, combined with charting her temperature to work out when she was ovulating (and avoid!).

He told me it's the only estrogen-free pill . He's either being a bit lazy or doesn't know his stuff - there are many progesterone-only Pills on the market, it's just that Cerazette is one of the newest and most popular. I didn't get on with Cerazette (at all) and so my GP put me on Micronor instead, which is the same principle. GPs should have a big book or database with all the different medicines in it - mine certainly does - and should be able to choose one that is right for you.

Hey! Same problem here, suffering from migraines since I was a kid. They got much worse during puberty and with most pills I tried. But then a doctor gave me Cerazette (you can get it in Dubai in most pharmacies without prescription) and the migraine got a lot better. He told me it's the only estrogen-free pill and that many girls with migraine problems can't take estrogen-based pills because they aggravate the headache. Ever since then I still have migraines from time to time, but they're not related to the pill anymore, only to other factors (irregular sleeping pattern etc.).

Why don't you just try a different brand of Pill? I remember having to try a couple before finding one that fitted (one gave me random dry skin, another made me feel really low!). All in all, I think I've been on about 5 different brands over the last 15 years.
