my 15mo dd used to love her food.
She has now decided to be really picky and only seems to eat jar foods?
Is this a bad thing?
Any ideas how to get her to eat the food i make her again?

ok, i didnt give her any milk or snacks towards dinner time hoping she would be hungry enough to eat what i made her. No Luck!! So i did what kiwispers said and mixed half a jar with half of my food and she ate most of it!!!! Why didnt i think of that? So i suppose the next step is mixing less and less of the jars. Im also going to have a look at whats in the jars and work out the percentages to make my own meals for her that taste like the jars. She has her 15mo jabs tomorrow so ill talk through with the dr too and also make sure she isnt unwell. thanks all for your help. Lets hope she gets better at eating.

Good luck! And fyi noticed on the Ellas kitchen sachets that they have the percentages of the ingrediants so maybe you could work it out and make your DD the same. Probably much cheaper. We use them to coat the stuff DD doesnt like, that is until she catches on. edited by nutty on 20/11/2011

ok well clearly my opinion is a bit different to the other posters, I wouldn't leave your/my 15m/o crying and hungry, I think they are too small to really get the "eat this or nothing" idea and I don't see the point in putting them through that at this age so long as they are having healthy food. so, I would try this, mix some jar food with your food, (freshly cooked meat, minced or pureed) even if the combo seems awful, and see if she eats it that way. try new foods, new spices, new flavours, new textures, she may be bored. make your own similar versions of the the jar foods she likes make at least one meal a day a jar free one, probably lunch. give her a break, she has been unwell, she'll get there.

My DD is 15months too. Some days she eats more than me and others just fresh air.Im all for letting her go hungry if she doesnt want her dinner but do worry like you about her waking in the night although have tried it and she was fine and slept through. Was very hungry next morning mind. If she wokein the night would try to resettle her and put her down without offering food/milk maybe just water but hasn't happened yet. She has milk in her breakfast, yoghurt midday and 150ml before bed. I try to give her more calcium rich veggies rather than dairy products as we have allergies in the family and when we started her on cows milkit made her wake in the night until we reduced it. I think its something like min 200ml at this age but not 100% sure.

so start with making her fruity things like apple and pear etc and then gradually introduce potato to it?? Would this be enough for her diet though? Im giving her milk mid afternoon (cows milk),could this be filling her up? How much milk should she be having at her age? At the moment she has milk at 6am, then more with her breakfast, then 200ml mid afternoon and then the same again before bed.

Thanks FCM. I know, she always seems to be one step ahead of me!! She is clever! Thats the other thing i thought of.....starving her until she eats our food. The only thing is that she is sooo stubborn and she will probably be quite happy to go to bed with nothing and then wake up in the night crying as she is hungry! Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place!! Do i then leave her crying to the morning/she falls asleep again?? Try giving her again the food you prepared then, she'll either eat it or choose to sleep hungry. She'll do that for couple of days but eventually she'll realize that there are no more jars for her. As a mother, you'd know what is "too much crying" and that's the right time you give her then what she wants because we don't want our kids to have stomach ache out of hunger and start the whole process all over again in the day. My 3 yr old dd did that a lot with me when she was younger. Now, she eats just about everything I place on the table. If your child is into sweets then make similar food as jar food. let her eat sweets, even if it's the only thing she is eating as long as it is prepared by you. Eventually she'll get used to your cooking and would start eating everything. My dd loves eating yogurt , I use to freak out. I tried giving her flavored ones, she refused, then in that plain yogurt she used to eat, I started adding sugar.,when she got used to it, I introduced to her flavored ones, she started eating that, then I started blending the plain yogurt with different fruits and now she is loving it. :)

Oh she's clever lol noticing that ure putting ure food in the jars....stop giving her the jars.... And only offer her your food shell get hungry and will eventually eat your food again.... If its the sweetness give her natural sweetness like pears and boil up some apples etc...be strong and don't buy no more jars.. I had the same problem with my eldest who is 11 now.....I never give jars or powdered food to my other little ones now, as I know they d prefer it to my cooking lol

kiwispers, our children seem to go through the same things at the same time!!! Ive gone back to basics and started to puree the foods again but last night she was not interested!! grrr!! She is teething and she does have a bit of a cough at the moment so maybe this has something to do with it. Ive even tried putting my food in an empty jar but she has worked that one out!! Cant wait to go home at christmas and get mum to help sort her out!!

My 15 month old is going through a similar phase, he had sachets for more or less the first time in a recent trip to europe and now he asks for them constantly. I think it has a bit to do with teething and also the jar foods are really sweet. You can start pureeing the home made foods a bit more and gradually reintroduce chunks and table foods again. it is a bad thing because the nutrient content in jar foods is much lower than fresh foods and its important they start chewing properly for good jaw development, but of course the occasional jar doesn't hurt so long as they are getting fresh meat and dairy (the percentage meat content in jar foods is fairly low)
