Hi, First time mother of a 9 week old here and I finally feel ready to take my little one out and about for longer stretches of time. Just wanted some of your experiences on which malls/places they have found BF friendly in Dubai (and which ones you have NOT!). I haven't started pumping yet- and am hoping thats not the only way to be able to do more than 2-3 hour sojourns with the baby!

The problem with the nursing areasthat also have the changing table in the same space is that if your unlucky someone just changed their older baby's messy diaper or the room is not well maintained (waste basket beeing emptied regularly, good ventilation) then it really smells awful. I've been to the IKEA one a while ago, about 2 years so it might has changed there but at that time I couldn't nurse there because of the smell. totally agree, frankly nursing next to a wastebin full of dirty nappies is the same or worse as being expected to nurse in the toilets.

On that end of the mall they have benches on the ground floor and first for depending how busy it is it might be quiet enough. Or you go down the corridor to the big restroom near the food court, they have a seating area there. With the right coverage it should be able to nurse outside of the washroom, kind of sad that some expect us to hide away like we're doing something immoral, will definitely try to be more relaxed with next one But nice nursing rooms on the other hand also offer a nice relaxing environment feed baby and rest a bit.

Thanks all of you :) I am not sure I have reached the stage where I could manage in a coffee shop just as yet (baby steps) but it helps to know that most malls have the right facilities. Has any of you tried feeding a baby somewhere around Ikea?? Ikea has a baby changing/feeding room.

Dubai Mall is the BEST for this! Go to the area that has all the designer boutiques (fashion avenue, I think it is called?) The ladies loo in that section has a mother/baby area behind a sliding door which has a luxurious changing area (much nicer than the changing pad at home!) and then 2 separate and completely private feeding rooms. In each there is a big comfy armchair and a table to put your stuff on, a shelf and space for you to take your pram in. Absolutely fantastic if you don't want to breast feed in public. my baby is very easily distracted by noise and people being around and quite a chunky not-so-little thing so he is by no means a discreet feeder and I could never keep him under my feeding cover!

don't worry, most of the malls have facilities as Lilli said. at the end of the day, you will get used to BF in public. Sometimes, I even used fitting rooms of stores (if they had chairs/benches) or fed DS discretely in coffee shops and restaurants.

I found the mothers rooms in Deira City Center nice as they are not directly part of the ladies room and are not smelly. I've been to the mothers room in Burjuman Center once and it was like a big lounge with sofas-a bit well used though.Mercato has a mothers room upstairs near Costa coffee. In Ibn Battuta and Festival City there are seating areas in some of the bigger the washrooms where you can sit and where it isn't smelly' , although it is in fact located in the ladies room and I can see that out of mere principle that would be a not so good option after all why should baby eat in washroom,? Plus in those two location it can also get quite busy, so there is less privacy and it also isn't as quiet as in designated mothers rooms which can be an issue if your baby is easily distracted or if you are nervous nursing I front of other people. Mall of the Emirates has seperate rooms for nursing and changing as part of some of the washrooms but I would not go there again as it absolutely smells revolting in most of them and no child should have to eat there. I also got the tip to ask in shops if you can nip into one of their change rooms if need be. It worked in most places some of the larger baby stores even have nursing rooms.Dubai Mall has nursing rooms near the changing areas in some bathrooms, clean and not smelly but the stool they provide for sitting is a bit uncomfortable. There I would try and locate a sofa on one of the upper floors away from the crowds and nurse there, more comfortable and just as quiet edited by Lilli34 on 24/02/2012

Hi gauri, my ds is 7 weeks old and im also exclusively breastfeeding. Im not sure about breastfeeding rooms etc but i found baby shops to be very accommodating. I was in mothercare when it was time for ds to feed and they made the fitting room available for me. Not ideal, but i preferred that over the public washrooms. I have fed ds in starbucks too. Just pick a quiet corner, cover up and go for it. People did not even give me a second glance. Enjoy your outings, im still taking it slow too!
