Is there such thing as sugar free chocolate cake?

Or close enough to it?

I want to make DD's 1st birthday cake, nothing over the top fancy as its not for her party. I want it to be chocolate with icing. I know its almost impossible to have a sugar free choccie cake/icing, but do any of you mum's have a great but simple recipe for a chocolate cake that would be good for DD? I realize she won't be eating it all, if any, but we are doing a special 'cake smash' so I won't be too sure of how much she may consume. Or am I just being totally over paranoid about the sugar free thing and just go for a standard chocolate cake recipe?

Thanks everyone! I think I'll keep it simple and just bake a normal chocolate cake. Hopefully the actual amount of sugar she'll consume will be minimal. Betty Crocker has never failed me, so i'll call on her again! ;)

yes, for the amount she'll actually eat, it's really not going to hurt her. I would also avoid sugar substitutes which are invariably full of aspartame and stuff, so worse that the small amount of sugar she'll have. As Kiwispiers says, sugar, date syrup, agave syrup, apple or grape juice concentrate... it's all the same thing really... even carrots contain "sugar", just not the refined white stuff,

I tend to agree, I think the main point was just that there wasn't really a solid body of evidence in support of the safety of Stevia, so its more along the lines of "better safe than sorry", not that I know anything about it, but I found it interesting. Its ok for kids to have sugar, (sucrose, fructose, lactose etc) sugar is just another name for simple carbohydrate and their little bodies have no problem processing it (and need it!), its all about balance and also trying to avoid them developing a preference for low nutrient junk foods over healthy real food, so a piece of cake once a year is really not a big deal.

I'm also very careful about what I give to the little ones and generally stick to apple juice or occasionally real maple syrup as sweeteners. these are essentially sugars too though, hence suggesting Stevia. I'm a little hesitant to be 'terrified' of Stevia based on that article because the author goes on to recommend Agave. They make a good point though...stick to the tried and tested...raw sugar, apple juice, honey (after 12 months!) and maple syrup. <em>edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011</em>

There's another trendy sugar substitute doing the rounds too...agave nectar I think. I know little about it except that lots of people have switched thinking it's better for them. All I know is that for diabetics, it's actually worse than refined white sugar! Don't use agave. ;)

Thanks Green-ish! I'm currently in Oz so where would I find Stevia? What does the packaging look like to help me find it on a shelf? Yeah, thats my last resort - to bake a normal sugar filled cake and put it down to the 'once a year' treat! :D edited by shellly on 09/10/2011 Stevia is near all of the artificial sweetners, either in the sugar aisle or near baking specific stuff...you can buy a powdered form of which you use a little less than the same amt of sugar, or there are little tabs, like those hideous Sweet n Low things. ;) I bought mine at Woolies. Have seen it in Coles too. Mine is Nativa brand... http://www.natvia.com.au/ :D

The cake is solely for the purpose of cake smashing. Although, as we'll all be sitting around her I dare say we'll be stealing a few bites here and there! :D

Cocoa is bitter without the addition of something sweet, if you really want to go sugar free, a banana cake is a better option, you could experiment with adding cocoa to it, would probably work ok but banana on its own is lovely anyway and if you google it, cocoa is probably bad for kids anyway ;). Anyway, I went through the same as you and decided in the end that I would just add sugar, because to be honest the cake wasn't really for him to eat, and sugar makes the cake rise better, more moist etc. I did let him have some, sugar isn't bad for kids, its about amounts/frequency etc. Will people be eating the cake at all or is it just for the cake smash photos, i.e is it important it actually tastes nice?

shellly...can you buy stevia over there? Organics might stock it. It's a plant extract that's an excellent substitute for sugar - No GI so it doesn't mess with blood sugar levels (like sugar and - no calories :D - lowers BP and improves digestion - 100% natural and safe even for little ones. :) (I'm on a health kick at the moment so have done the research!) Otherwise, bake an over the top, rich and decadent, sugar laden death-by-chocolate, and let her enjoy a smushing a slab all over the place...it's only once a year. ;) <em>edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011</em>
