We have a fancy Angelcare monitor which we were really keen on but since I've shop and shipped it here and tried it, it hasn't been working for us because we live in one of the older villas in Jumeirah and the walls are really thick. So while it's great on the same floor, it doesn't seem to work from upstairs to down. Which I now need because we're moving baby into her room and cot after she has overgrown her Moses basket which I just would move around.

Anyone have any suggestions (or have had a similar problem that you fixed)? Looking for something with video preferably coz I'm a bit obsessive :P (a whole other story)!

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. In regards to positioning differently, I meant what kiwiwhispers said in that you reposition the handheld unit to an area where it transmits with the one in the baby's room. Just turn up the volume and you will hear it for sure. I can't recommend using the sensor pads enough!!! Especially as you are using video surveillance,the sensor pads offer such peace of mind particularly when you are sleeping.

Been trying out the Angelcare for a bit longer before we give up. Good to know your views considering you have both M. A lot of people speak highly of the avent but don't have experience of the other - and I really don't want to spend another pile and have a similar situation. Maybe I'm expecting too much of a monitor and they're all like this??!! For the momement it works till the passage way downstairs if I leave baby's room partially open. So going with that. My husband has hooked it to a camera tripod stand so going to try moving it a few feet away from the bed, closer to the door and see if it will extend atleast to the entrance of the living room. If not I guess I'll get one of the cheaper no frills ones like the one green-ish has and use both (one to alert me to any sound and the Angelcare for the video to check) Thanks again.

Hi Susan - we have had two monitors, an Avent one and the Angel Care one. Personally we prefer the Angel Care as the sensor pads really give us peace of mind that the unit will alarm us if DD is not breathing. We got the version without the video for AED550 from http://www.babyandme.net/ . We also live in a two storey villa and sometimes get interference on the handheld but repositioning it usually helps.

We had the tommy digital, great in our big house. Now we have the Summer baby touch video monitor. Range just makes it from upstairs to downstairs but excellent monitor. Around 150 quid from UK. You can even have multiple camera's linked up to the one reciever.

I still use the little Bebecom monitor I bought from a pharmacy for about 180dhs. It's four years old and has never let me down. No video, no flash features, but it picks up the slightest sound from baby and has worked in every house we've used it in. :)

Thanks ladies. What we have is the AC1100 too. Paid a small fortune for it even from the US (random aside: its not available here but based on the cost differences on the other models i've reaearched, I wonder how much it's going to cost here when it does arrive!) Maybe I'll try positioning it at the nearest point where it doesn't beep it's silly little head off as you suggest kiwi and see how that works out. It's mainly for day naps and a few hours at night until we go up to bed. Really not keen to buy another and have a similar situ.

What we've got for DD is Angelcare Monitor AC1100 (video, sound and movement). we keep it moving sometimes when we lose the signal as the wall here is so thick.

Ours is the same but I just leave the parent unit on the landing of the stairs, you don't need to be right next to it to hear it as its pretty loud, try that before forking out for another.

Hi We have the Tomy TD350. Really happy with it. We did try another Tomy digital one and that one did not even make it down the stairs before loosing signal. We can even take the TD350 outside (the opposite side of the house to DD room) and we also in an old villa with thick walls. It's Dhs799 from baby shop but cheaper on Amazon and shop and ship. It has night light, timer and temp. We love it. Good luck

it was about 1400 from memory but we got it in the sale for about 1000 I think? Not the cheapest monitor but it is worth it!

Hi giggles. Yes it is te sensor one (sensor sound and video). We dont use the sensor anymore really though. How do uou mean position it differently? We've tried it exactly at her bed (the video and sound unit) and take the other handheld around. Is there a different way to do it? Must admit we only skimmed through the manual for basics maybe i should check again. No it's not damaged at all. I use it everyday now but it just won't work if I go beyond a certain range (starts beeping as it's meant to) if I come downstairs. Works in certain bits (room directly below) but the areas I spend my time in are unfortunately not there. Sydneygal I did hear some good reviews on the avent. Do you mind my asking how much it was approximately? And where you bought it from? Eta: duh! Just realized you said mothercare sydneygal! Thanks ladies! <em>edited by susandiaz on 04/11/2011</em>

Is it the one with the sensor pads under the mattress? We have that one but haven't experienced any problems with it and we are in a 2 story situation too. Have you tried relocating the monitor you have downstairs to different areas. Our villa is old too and the walls are quite thick so we have positioned the monitor almost directly under DDs room but it also works near the stairs. I hope it didn't get damaged in transit. Sorry I don't know of any other brands you could try. Good luck.
