Hi. Was just curious as to which yogurts you buy for your toddlers. Are the cheapie 1 dirham Al marai types (for want of a better description!) ok to give or do the additives do more harm than good. I guess my question is do you fork out more for special yogurts? Also is it ok to give a toddler
-UHT processed milk (say a few times a week, just for convenience of carrying milk in this weather)
-Activia type drinks or are their sysytems too senstive for those 'special bacteria'.
- Danone juice/milk drink
- Soya mlk drinks

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and tips.

Al Ain full fat yoghurt. I add fruit or cheese to it but no baby yoghurt no ready made fruits yoghurt. We had no problems with it and my baby absolutely loves it (she is 8 months old).

I use Al Mirai, either plain or add my own fruit purees to make different flavors. With regard to juice, i would just make sure whatever you buy is '100% juice'. And you have to read the label carefully as some brands are pretty convincing when they are actually not! I water DD's down to something like 1/3 juice 2/3 water. Negates the handiness of having the little cartons, i know. Soy is a tricky one, we went through this with DD at the beginning of the year when she was going through a lactose intolerance stage. After a lot of reading, we decided not to continue with it. There are some pretty scary studies out there on the results of long term exposure to soya products. There are also of course studies that go against these. It's definitely one i would research well before you decide anything.

I also give any natural organic full fat yogurt and just mix it with some crushed fruit like papaya or raspberries. DS loves this even if it's quite sour. Occasionally I'll buy the Rachels fruit baby yogurts but I actually dilute them with some natural yogurt to make them go further and be less sweet! :)

most yogurts marketed towards children contain too much sugar. We started out with plain white yogurt and every now and then I'll get the Danone kiddie yogurts, but they are more like treats, because of the sugar. Same goes for the Danone kiddie yogurt drinks, the one with the dino on the bottle. Depending on the age of your child I would either stick with plain white yogurt (read labelto check if they have added preservatives or other junk) or go with regular fruit yogurt, like Rachels organic, to get the toddler used to the fruit chunks in the yogurt (I missed that and DD won't have any texture in her yogurt now). Or you add your own fruit to plain white yogurt.... You could also go for "fromage frais" sold at C4, that comes in small portions in plain or vanilla flavour. I only started giving my DD the activia/ actimel type drinks recently when she was 3. Her pediatrician said they were fine to give, and ctually help if there are issues with constipation. But don't know from what age on it's advisable to give it to them, though.

I give Rachels organic full fat plain yoghurt, ingredients, organic cows milk and nothing else. I find that all the "baby" yoghurts including the organic ones are high in sugar (calling it concentrated fruit juice might make you feel better but really its still sugar). I wouldn't give flavored sweetened milk so likewise I don't want to give flavoured or sweetened yoghurt if that makes sense. I either give the yogurt by itself or add fresh fruit. The only reason not to use the al marai stuff is its not organic milk, otherwise its fine, I use it sometimes. UHT milk has some e numbers in it (stabilisers etc) so fresh is better. Activia type drinks should be fine, probiotics are good at any age. Soya milk and products, controversial, won't comment.

We've been using the Petit ? (sorry can't remember the full name) brand since DD was about 7 months old. Our local Spinneys stocks a 6-pack at 23 dirhams and a 4-pack at 10 dirhams. The four packs come in Apricot and Strawberry flavours and the container is actually bigger than the 6-pack (don't tell Spinneys!). I give her one container each morning after she has had her cereal and milk. I'm sure there are some non-nutritional components in there but I've been having a difficult time getting DD to drink milk since we introduced solids that I am happy for her to take the yoghurt so enthusiastically.
