Is it too far? Is the road dangerous? Willing to go 8 in the morning so I could be back by noon.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I always go on my own. Been many times. [b'>Never seen any sign of a bandit[/b'>, never needed a alcohol permit. The Barracuda 'Bandit" always puts me in mind of someone in a black brimmed hat and an eye-mask.

they deliver.... thats the only way i do it i drove once with DH and some friends and felt very nervous. definitely not worth the high blood pressure cant remember the website, i'm sure if u google it'll come up minimum spend of 1500dhs, but if u have a group of u, its not that much and they sometimes give u a free bottle of something as a gesture just make sure u have a licence for your home. Centaurus. You have to be able to give the name (and email address?) of someone they've delivered to previously.

It's not in a Barracuda employee's interest to tell you that any booze you buy from them can't be legally transported home LOL! Surely you all are not implying that the employee would mis-lead an un-suspecting person so they would come and purchase alcohol???? :D :D Noooooo! Probably as Anon says, they don't know but aren't going to give a whiff of doubt :)

I called the barracuda guys couple of days ago and they said as long as you have a liquor license you can carry alcohol all over the UAE! I assume he knows what he's talking about. And I am on DH's license. edited by neda_la on 14/01/2011 Wrong. He has no idea what he is talking about.

A LIQUOR LICENCE IS ONLY VALID IN THE EMIRATE IT IS ISSUED IN But please. feel free to rock up to Sharjah Police station with a boot full of booze and show your Dubai Liquor licence....... edited by Izzy99 on 15/01/2011

Sure one can drive there alone, have done so for years... if you're unsure about the "bandits" go first north towards RAK after leaving the Barracuda and then take a turn towards Emirates/Bypass road.

Also have been on my own. Have never needed a license, never run into bandits, and don't speed or act like an idiot when I drive back to Dubai. If you take the bypass road. Follow it to the very end. When you get to the end turn left. When you come to Emirates road take it towards Ras AL Kaimah. Start looking for signs to Dreamland Aqua park. Follow that road to the end. Turn right. When you see the enormous plane on the left hand side, turn left. ETA: I also don't buy thousands of dirhams in alcohol so therefore my purchases probably are not worthy of any bandits. :D edited by bornconfused on 14/01/2011

Take a picture of their number plate and then say you are placing a call to your student at HCT (there are many policemen taking evening classes there) - they'll be gone in a heart beat

I suppose if one was to get shunted by the Barracuda Bandits they can photograph the offending car with the threat to report them to the police. This is hoped to be enough of a deterrent.

I've been on my own frequently. From Mirdif it will take about 45 minutes. You do not need to show a licence, there is no limit (apart from your own funds) on how much you can buy, there is no 30% tax added at the till and the choice is fabulous. An as others have said, a Dubai licence will not cover you if you are caught in Sharjah (a poster called Sharjah police who confirmed this).

'two questions: could u please give me the directions from bypass road? When I called Barracuda they said I just have to continue Emirates road. And second, how long is it going to get there from Mirdif? And also come back(due to Sharjah traffic)?

If you go on the bypass road (611) you will be fine .... however I wouldn't go without being on DH's licence (although it only covers Dubai Emirate) ... perhaps take a friend too for reinforcement. We have never encountered the Baracuda Bandits in two years of regular visits (DH and I normally go on his day off), but I would take a camera and if they say they're calling the police be prepared to call their bluff and take their picture, that's what I would do. Good luck! ps can you pick me up 6 bottles of NZ sauv blanc?? only joking!

Just make sure you go to the "right" part of the Barracuda - my first trip I managed to end up in the wrong half. I will say no more, but it was an experience that lasted about 1 minute before I and the guy behind the desk both realised I didn't want to be where I was LOL

Not sure what kind of responses you are going to get on this one, but I am into harm minimisation myself - if you do go on your own (which I would not) then do it on a Friday when there is less traffic going through Sharjah. Saturday is too busy. You should also search the forum for "barracuda bandits" so that you are fully aware.
