Wealthy Gulf Arab emirate Abu Dhabi has laid off large numbers of foreign workers as it looks to lower costs and promote jobs for citizens, several people familiar with the matter said.

Hundreds more expatriate jobs could be on the line in the near future.

Not a surprise at all. Don't want any "springs" here now, do they?

It remains a mystery to me. All this knowledge that is released now, how they will find it locally...??? These expats were all hired for a reason, most probably not for a fun to get more foreign people into the country :) We are here to share our skills, best practices and knowledge... Look at the majors universities here are teaching, they are great, but very limited. The local employees profiles, skills and hands on experience... Plus the culture, the strive for excellence is very different here as I've seen it elsewhere. On the other hand, there might have been just too much fat in these organisations, can also happen here easily, especially under local management

Yes, the article says that this is for the Government depts which is understandable. Can't see the private sectors going ahead (in the near future) with this apart from fulfilling their compulsory Emirati quota.

Yes, they meant to say thousands of Expat jobs are on the line I should think. The projects that actually survived the crash are coming to fruition now and there are no new ones on the horizon.
