which 4x4 would you recommend for off road driving and cruising through the desert? in know these cars guzzle a lot, but may you know one which is a little bit more eco-friendly (especially if I wanna take this car to europe when leaving uae one day)...
thanks.

we had 4 years a nice Payero Exceed ....fantastic!!!! I think is a special model ...if I'm not wrong!!! Wahiba sands in Oman still remember us!!! 4 days without problems or stuck in the sand. Now we have Tahoe, and Lexus...both are very good...but I've to tell you that my husband has big experience... he crossed Sahara desert by car...from Abidjan to Algeria

There isn't really any "best" 4x4, because so much depends on the skill of the driver. In the right hands, an ancient Jeep Wrangler will be better than a brand-new Pajero or Nissan Patrol. You can have the most expensive high-tech 4x4 imaginable but if you don't have the proper skills and experience to drive in the desert, you will quickly get stuck (or worse). Since you will be doing most of your driving on normal tarmac, concentrate on finding one that's comfortable and reliable on-road.

and who will learn me how to drive in the desert? :-) or is it just practicing and practicing? Ride with someone who can teach you then follow them; or take a course. Don't just go out and think "This looks easy" and drive. It's not and you can get yourself in all sorts of trouble if you don't know what you're doing. Never go alone. We have a Prado and a Jeep Wrangler. Both are very capable vehicles in the desert. As for Audis, are you thinking of the Q7? IF so, they are quite a low vehicle with not as much ground clearance as the Patrols/Landcruisers/Pajeros etc. You are likely to get high-centred (stuck) on the top of a dune if you don't have a decent clearance. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 20/01/2011

Landrover Discovery is one to consider. We have a Discovery3 (now superceded by the D4) here in Australia & while we haven't taken it beach driving yet (was our plan to do that this summer but we got washed out) it is supposed to be very easy. Is a fantastic car and I'm very sorry we'll have to sell it before coming to Dubai. We'll probably go out and buy a D4 when we return.

Mitsubishi Pajero is among the best off road vehicles. Short wheel base is great for off road performance.

Ask in show room.
