"we are looking for a female british national" would replace "national" to "native speaker" not necessarily - i know lots of Indians (from India) who's first language is English and they consider themselves as native speakers.... so true!

Why does the person have to have this? To back up a nursery which is probably carrying some British name and owned by someone from ------- let's say "elsewhere" .... so true!

Ladies, she needs someone who speaks in tongues Not just any - only the right one But don't reply if you're a man Cause a tootoy aint in the plan Just a girl with the right accent Now that would be heaven sent!

Perhaps the trouble is the salary you are offering? Often people judge who you are looking for based on the renumeration. Actually no. I have not mentioned the salary in the ad but we are offering a very good salary.

Ingrid, that would exclude me once again. I'm Dutch and only have a Dutch passport and learnt to speak English while living in Hong Kong as a child. Have lived in South Africa and in the Uk. Not trying to be difficult, but just trying to point out how complicated the issue is. Just trying to point out that by stating it in these ways you might be excluding people who might be very suitable for the job. This ties in nicely to the 'where are you from' thread by the way.

What about me? I'm very well-educated, but I'm afraid my accent is more New York than Newcastle? Perhaps the trouble is the salary you are offering? Often people judge who you are looking for based on the renumeration.

It is a difficult one to phrase, my passport says I am Dutch but I have a British mother (Dutch father). We speak English as a family. I went to a British boarding school in the depths of Kent so my accent is full on English. Perhaps ask for someone who has been educated/brought up in the UK. You can always then use your discretion. Unfortunatly you are going to get a large number of people who don't read ads and just send out their CV on the off chance.

What is a pure British accent anyway? Can it be someone from Newcastle, Liverpool, Scotland, Wales ?????

Out of interest, technically I am not a native english speaker, but I personally think that my english is vey good and I only have a slight accent. I speak mostly English with my DH as it is his first language and have been speaking it since I was about six. Would you consider hiring me? I have seen so many jobs adds that state native English speakers only, but what about people like me? I get the feeling that many people might just disregard my appication at once as English is my second language.

Perhaps just say White in the advert as I assume that's the issue that you're skirting around?
