How much to tip a maid?

Hi everyone,

I found myself in a strange situation yesterday, a maid who's been coming for the past 4 months and doing a terrific job suddenly left a big mess in my house: cleaning supplies scattered around, stuff that she usually puts away neatly was shoved in random drawers, garbage left outside the door.. etc. Very unlike her. I realized that my husband, not knowing how much I usually tip her, left her a smaller tip this time, so maybe this was her way of acting out.. In any case, I am wondering what is an appropriate amount to tip a maid for 3-4 hours of work? Given that she comes from an agency. Any info helps. Thank you.

Thanks for all your responses. Looks like my tipping is not any inferior to everyone else's and DH just rounds up as well. Maybe she did have a bad day or the driver came in early, which wouldn't be out of line because she often comes in up to an hour late, but whatever happened I would rather not be in a position of babysitting a maid to make sure she behaves. I don't want to report her, perhaps there are people who are happy with her work, but I will look for a new maid.

Maybe the driver came early and she had to do that last minute panic thing?

Did you ask her why she left the place in such a mess. That's your starting point. If she talks about the tip, tell her in no uncertain terms that her days of receiving tips are over. If it's something else, tell her to pull her socks up. If it happens again, request a different maid.

The one who's upstairs right now? Sod all, she's just woken DS up halfway through his nap with her banging around although DH asked her to be quiet. I am so sick of maid agencies right now.

I do the same as Princess I - I don't tip every week, but I give a lump sum at the end of the year. OP - if your maid's behaviour has really been caused by the smaller tip thing, rather than just she was having a bad day (maybe unwell, or with something on her mind), then the tipping has to stop as you are being taken for granted. If I were you, I'd give her the benefit of the doubt, let her come once more, and don't leave any tip at all. If the same thing happens again, report her to the agency and get them to send you a new maid. The last thing you want is a maid who maybe gets so peeved that she starts helping herself to "compensate" herself for your poor tipping!

Outside of how much to tip, I would complain to the agency a request a new maid. I would refuse to be held to ransom by a maid, which is pretty much what she's doing.

how rude of her to do that ! I might be sounding out of line here but a tip no matter how great or small should be recived with smile and a thank you .. not this kind of behaviour ! One is not obliged to tip.. you do it as a gesture and for people to snigger and complain that they havnt got enough is just being rude ! sorry !

I never tip the same amount each week and never tip the first week as I have been in the same situation as you are in now, where the cleaner has come to expect that amount each week. I usually round it up so if I am to pay 135, I would leave 150; if she is due 90 I leave 100. edited by cleanfreak on 12/10/2011
