my eldest son is 6 too, and no way can he go to the mens alone. He comes with me , in the ladies and they just know that to be normal... I also have a 4 yr old son so they both are with me !

He's not too old to accompany you into the ladies. Take him with you until such time you feel comfortable sending him in to the gents on his own. No way should he be going in there on his own at 6. Agree completely. My son is 6 and still comes with me into the ladies. No need for any discussion or fuss about it...that's just what happens when he's with Mum. It doesn't bother him at all. Most malls have the separate 'baby change' areas with a toilet so we go in there (I have the 4 & 2 yr olds with me too).

My DS is almost 9 and has only just recently started going into the Mens on his own. He's in and out so quickly (he can't walk, only runs!) so I barely have time to sip my coffee when he's back. I think you'll know "when the time's right", in the meantime keep him with you!

I can't really help you with this, but I do understand your concern. my boy can still go with me to the ladies room, but I always wonder what We'll be doing when he is old to do so!!

I was curious how other people who have children of the opposite gender handle public restrooms here. My oldest is 6 and he obviously doesn't need help using the restroom but I am just not really comfortable sending him into a public restroom at the mall by himself but at the same time he seems like he is getting too old to accompany me into the ladies room. We are new here and haven't encountered this issue yet since DH has been with us most of the time when we are out but now that we are starting to get settled and venturing out on our own more I know we will encounter it eventually. Sorry if it is a silly question, but I am genuinely curious. Most big shopping malls etc in our home country had family restrooms so we didn't encounter this issue.
