...a staff member from City said to me, "Oh, you still have such a tummy."

Would I have been out of order if I smacked her in the chops?

I do find some people just don't think what they are saying and are utterly rude. At the ID recently I had the lady look at my passport and she looked me up and down and then to the passport again, and straight as you like said, " You are fat now maam". I would have paid her on the "same coin" and go "And you are ugly - but I can diet."[url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php'>[img'>http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-signs136.gif[/img'>[/url'>

Thank you :). I grew up in Norway and always liked the name! She is indeed getting better and we're hoping to be able to have her out of NICU tomorrow. Although every time I say that she ends up getting an extension of her sentence! :D. I spoke to the consultant today, though, and he is optimistic for tomorrow. And as much as I hate it, if it's best for her then so be it. I'll start a separate thread for the changes tomorrow so other posters can add in their experiences too. Overall I'd say it's on the positive side!

Oh DC...woman is a complete numpty...treat it with the contempt it deserves,do not get upset by such a stupid remark from someone who should know better. You have enough going on... hope your little darling is getting better and just concentrate on your lovely family. best wishes...Anne

DC, if you have the time and energy it would be great if you could share some of those changes as I'll be going there soon. Always nice to know what to look out for and where to put up a fight. I would also make a formal complaint, again energy permitting, or just talk to someone in patient relations. I filed a complaint with AH a while ago and they were very pro-active, still waiting to see how it ends up though. Congrats on your girl, any Swedish genes in the family?

Just no idea. An hour after delivery, us feeling all loved up, stoopid nurse told my husband he was a good man not to leave me considering how old I was and how long we had been married before I gave him a child. Now that I would have smacked her for.

I told the nursing staff up here on the ward but maybe I should let the management know too. I did actually have PND after DS was born and am just hitting that point with this baby where the hormones all exit the building and you end up a sobbing mess because room service is late with your dinner! So probably not the best day for her to say that. I'll never forget going into DH's office ten days after we had DS and the first question the HR manager asked was "So how long will it take your stomach to go down?" We had DS at City 17 months ago and they seem to have implemented a fair few changes since then, so I was thinking of sending them an email letting them know our opinions on whether they've worked for the better or not. I should add sensitivity training to it!

You know what? I think that I might have told her to go and F@%& herself. *LIKE* Seriously though, DC, thats just not on. As others have mentioned, these types of comments do not belong in a maternity ward. Regardless of their cultures and what may be acceptable in their home country to say this to a new mum who had her baby 5 minutes ago AND who is on her way to NICU is just very, very bad. I'd make a formal complaint too! Shocking!!!

I am absolutely serious when I say you should formally complain about this to hospital management. Staff should be more aware. Women are very fragile post natal and if you were say prone to post natal depression, these sorts of incidental thoughtless comments can be REALLY damaging. I assume you know that it's perfectly normal to still look pregnant after delivery. Someone just made a similar comment to me recently ( actually many people did) but one actually said "oh you haven't delivered yet?" I was devastated! Even though I knew this was a ridiculous comment and I did not look 9 months pregnant - well maybe 5, but not 9! I couldn't shake the feeling her comment gave me. I knew it was stupid but I carried that around with me for days! At two months post natal I think I was still hormonal and the hurt her comment made was way out of proportion to what it should have been. You can understand some people don't think or are just plain idiots, but hospital staff should know or at least be trained better! Congratulations on the arrival of your DD and I hope she's doing better. edited by Alicia on 02/11/2011

Arrrrgh how annoying. You were very restrained imho! God knows what I would do to her in my current pg state, let along in the days following a delivery! You looked fantastic when I met you with your newborn ds and I'm sure you look great now, so don't take any notice.

I think it would have been appropriate to explain to her that that is considered extremely rude in your culture and that you are surprised by the ignorance of someone who works in a maternity ward, since most women, in the weeks after delivery, still look pregnant...

The staff in maternity were cleaning my room 4 days after my c-section and saw DS asleep in bassinet, gasped out loud and said "but you are still pregnant" pointed at me, much discussion between each other in their own language, etc etc :(.

The physio came in the morning and my upper tummy muscles are 6cm apart, so I may need surgery to fix them. I was tempted to explain all that to the rude cow but I'd much rather just have punched her.
