mucousy poo...?

hi again ladies...
so the rash has cleared beautifully with the bepanthen (see raw bum thread) but then this morning we had a bit of mucous in a fairly runny poo which looked like it had blood in it (in the mucous) :( Put in a call to DS's doc but haven't heard back yet. Has this happened to anyone else? His latest poo was a bit green (hasn't eaten anything green) and mucousy but no blood.
The only new thing we tried in the last 2 days was a bit of the Ella's Organic Banana and Peach with his gluten free Plum brand cereal for breakfast (a small cube sized amount)..apart from that he has had veg like sweet potato, swede and a little carrot, plus some pear. I am also weaning off the breast so last night was the first night he had a bottle at the dreamfeed, but I can't imagine this is the problem as he's been ok with formula for some time now?
Anyone got any advice while I wait on his doctor to call back? Also, I bought some butternut squash and potato today to puree ... these should be fairly safe to introduce shouldn't they? Just not sure what to feed him now! :(
And lastly, DS is happy as larry as always..so no change to his energy or temperament to note...no fever or anything else either...
thanks

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this thread. I dealt with the very same poo in the diapers i was changing just over a week ago. She was happy as could be, no fever or rashes, but the diarrhea would't stop (five times before noon). We took her to the Doc after 2 days of it and he said to keep giving her lots of liquids and watch it closely and come back in two days with a sample if it didn't get better. After two days it showed a slight improvement and then got really bad again. The poo was exactly as you described it and scooping it up was pretty much the worst experience of my life, lol. In the end it turned out to be a bug and gave her some meds. She's all better now after a week of them. ope yours shows the same improvement.

well after that last poo yesterday there were no more until this morning...and so far he has done 2 very healthy looking normal poos (sweet potato colour LOL after dinner last night). Didn't hear back from the doc so I called the clinic this morning and she is away for 3 days....so may just keep an eye on it and monitor him. We used the Comfort formula last night so perhaps that helped and will stick to food he is OK with for a few days before introducing anything new. Think I will stay away from the sachets for a while as well...

The fever we had was only for a few hours at the start (before the runny poo) and I nearly didn't even take it (and still didn't give him anything for it as he wasn't cranky), he stayed happy the whole way through, no lethargy or grumpiness so its still possible its viral for you too and you missed the fever, it does seem to be doing the rounds, the analysis will let you know if there is any sort of infection. So many things it could be tbh, hopefully the formula change will help. If he's not waking at night to poo then def don't wake him to feed extra, I just meant if it does worsen.

Thanks Kiwi (can always rely on you for a detailed and helpful reply :) ) he hasn't got a fever and seems perfectly happy and full of energy. Tonight might stick to some sweet potato again then...was going to try some butternut squash and potato but maybe not a good idea (they don't seem allergenic)? His last poo was pretty normal looking. Have put the mucousy poos in the fridge (tightly wrapped!!) to take in for analysis, hopefully tomorrow. re: feeding on demand at night, he's not really waking in the night at all (until 5-6am which is the dummy issue!) - I wake him for the dreamfeed. Was going to just give the Aptamil comfort tonight rather than the No.1 in case the extra lactose in that is the problem.

oh I see you're already on it with the analysis. I wouldn't introduce anything new, makes it too hard to isolate if he has a food intolerance as yu'll have to elimanate everything. Try only bringing in one new food every 3 days or longer with potentially allergenic ones. Oh and some foods change colour on the way out, banana for example can come out as black streaks. But green poo and mucous are often hints of viral infection.

It could be viral, DS just had a mild tummy bug which started with the slightest of fevers (38) for a day and then continued with frequent runny but not watery poos which after a few days had ****** mucous. Because of the blood I took a nappy in to the Dr and had a stool analysis done, this takes around a week for the results so if you are considering it (and I would if I was you) get it done sooner rather than later. It could also definitely be a lactose or casein issue and it could be a combo of the two as a tummy bug can cause a temporary lactose intolerance. If the diarrhea continues, you might have to temporarily go back to feeding on demand/feeding at night just to keep him well hydrated (sorry I know you've just invested a lot of time in sleep training so you don't want to hear that). The results of our stool analysis showed infection but nothing bacterial came up in the cultures (and by the time the results came back he was fine again). The doc wasn't concerned by the blood, he said it was common but it was good to do a culture just to be safe.

will do, although I doubt it is the vegies...? Thinking more about the formula perhaps being the issue, hmmm. Still waiting to hear back from his doc. Just tried to take his poo sample to the docs downstairs in JBR where he has been before but unfortunately they are closed. He just had another poo which was slightly green but no mucous.

If you're thinking there could possibly be an intolerance issue, and solids are the only variables in his diet, maybe go back to just one or two that you know he handled with no problems. Food intolerances can be a pain in the behind to work out...it's a loooooooong, slow process. Introduce only one new food at a time for a couple of days. If that one seems fine, then try something else for a few days. Of course, the paed may say he's had some little virus or tummy bug and in a few days all will be well.

umm why do not you get his poo checked to keep your mind at ease, and see how it goes from there??

I know...hence the call in to the doc this morning (well I sent a text to her) but I haven't heard a reply yet. Will try and call soon if I don't hear back... No external source. His poo since that one with blood (which I've kept) has just been mucousy without blood (kept that too). I'm thinking if it's an intolerance it must be the formula as it seems weird that he'd be intolerant to fruit/veg, or am I wrong in thinking that? Could a baby be allergic to stone fruits? The spate with the raw bum occured shortly after I gave some pear/apricot from a sachet, and then this mucous now after a banana/peach sachet? Just to be clear, 99% of what he's been eating has been homecooked, these were just trials...?

To be honest...if I saw even a hint of blood (without an obvious external source), I'd be off to the paed just to be on the safe side. Maybe check the next nappy...and take it with you? I'm sure all is well, but there may be intolerance issues going on given the recent raw bum and now a 'nasty' poo. xx

thanks for the link Greenish....his last poo earlier was a bit like picture 11, though perhaps not that much mucous. I also heard it at the time and it was slightly explosive sounding...eek! Just been reading about lactase overload, perhaps this could be the issue too as he did drink quite alot of formula last night?

Hi sydneygal. REALLY mucus-y poo can be a sign of something nasty going on. Slightly mucus-y (lol) poo can be within the realms of normal. Blood streaking can be just a sign of mild constipation...or his wee system recovering from the sore bum. Have a look at this site for reassurance - http://www.babycenter.com.au/baby/dailycare/yourbabyspoo/ . The "baby poo gallery" is particularly 'interesting. :D

ok so now wondering, could it be lactose that is the problem? We'd been giving him Aptamil Comfort for the FF he has during the day and had been giving him Aptamil 1 at his 6.30pm feed as it was higher in calorie content (on the advice of someone we had been seeing). We had no issues with this, and he was being BF at 11pm (taking both sides). Last night was the first night he had Aptamil 1 at 6.30pm (240ml) and also at 11pm (180ml). I've just checked the cans and Comfort is 19.7g lactose in 100g, whereas Aptamil 1 is 51g! Will just give him the Comfort tonight for the evening feeds to see if that helps and hopefully will hear from doc in the meantime...any thoughts would be very welcome... PS - I was lactose intolerant as a baby and had goats milk, and weaned off any milk by about 7 months!
