Those in UAE prior to 2002 do you prefer the old or new Dubai?

I came to UAE begining of 1990 when Dubai airport was a tiny little thing with one small counter selling tea and one small duty free shop that resembled a jumble sale.
All the gates where side by side with numbers above them and you were taken to the plane by a little old bus.

I loved the old Dubai with the trade center being the tallest building (funny to see it now, it is so tiny compared to everything else).
I used to go daily to the Chicago Beach hotel, where it was virtually empty with just a handful of German tourists.
Not much choice in shopping malls either just Burjuman, City Center, Wafi, Lamcy Plaza and Al Guhrair.
I have a photo of me in Mirdiff the second week I arrived and there is NOTHING there, zero, just desert and one house in the distance which belonged to my friend Sheikh Saqar Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Taxis were a nightmare, dirty little things being driven by equally dirty looking drivers spitting Pan out of the window and tooting their horns madly. No meters, they just charged you what they wanted.
Dubai Sharjah road was virtually all desert with just a few stop off cafes on the way. We used to drive off the road onto the sand and fish for Hamour and Sultan Ibrahim. The sea that flowed through that area is now no longer there, its been built on lol.

I spent every weekend in Kalba at our farm, Fujeriah back then was so outdated and old, the main hotel being the Fujeriah Hilton which we used to go and play darts on a thursday night with german tourists and the odd few Brit expats who worked in the area. I used to drive my late partners olderly uncle Abdul Rahman back to Abu Dhabi at the end of each weekend it took me 4 hours from Kalba to Abudhabi, bet it takes much longer now.
I also remember when the Dubai AbuDhabi road was just one or two lanes, it was an uncomfortable journey when I first arrived as they had began to build the highway that is there now.

I loved those days and miss them a lot.
Sadly things began to change around the time I left in 2004, when I returned last year I got such a massive shock at the changes, I hated it at first. So many people, so many buildings, so many shopping malls. But underneath it will always be the Dubai I loved because it was the culture I fell in love with.

Is there anyone else on this board that remembers the Dubai of old? Which do you prefer? Am I the only one who prefers the old?

We have a documentary the BBC did in the 70's about the British chief of Dubai police and his relationship with the Sheik.. It's really interesting... That would be Brig Briggs... bet it's interesting! You know him ? We wrote to the BBC for it for our friend who is is son !! Yep, lovely man - like father like son lol I know of him; many in my circle at the time did know and respect him, receive advice. And, of course, in those early days of a new country (both before and after foundation) an experienced person like Brig Briggs was much needed as Chief od Police (or was he the Advisor to the new local Chief of Police, don't recall). He was known to be a true advocate of and for the local people who found themselves in unchartered waters after the British decided to leave this protectorate in 1968. I would love to see/or purchase this documentary. Would you please let me know the title? edited by crystalsindubai on 10/12/2011

I was looking through this website last night, it's a great insight to how Dubai used to be . I came across this page which I found funny :) http://www.dubaiasitusedtobe.com/pages/people/dubaisjumeirahjane.shtm Loving it! And that's the JJ attitude I remember...! Years later, a film on Dubai expats was produced by some Brits... had everyone locally & abroad in uproar for its impertinence!

the red sand is on lulu island which they trucked over there at great expense it was going to be a wildlife resort etc but now they are going to build on it at some point. they do still black out the mags, but i remember when we first came that Princess D was wearing a mini skirt, but the black marker peg came out and made it below the knees instead. i remember when the beach at emirates palace was a public beach and when they built the hotel it was called the conference hotel for the big gcc conference so then they had it and renamed it the emirates palace instead. At one point they supposedly wanted Disneyland on Lulu, until the costs were discussed! hmmmmh! where did you get that information, as I do remember writing that word for word way back when lol Not sure what's happening, I don't remember writing the paragraph above but I do remember adding the bit about Disneyland on Lulu!

Came to the UAE in 1978. It was tough then. When I arrived I was expecting my 1st child and went for my ante natal check up in al Maktoom hospital. The washroom was a hut with a Turkish toilet no AC and no toilet paper....gave birth in the rashid hospital....was there in labor for 3 days no contact with the outside world I gave birth to my son in 1980 in the Kuwait hospital in Sharjah there was a cat in the labor room!!!. things did improve in the 80's . I do miss the 80's with the chicago beach, week ends on empty beaches in Fujeira.....

I'd take Old Dubai any day!! Is there any place that reminds me of it? I can't really think of anything. I still like Beach Rd due to the fact that there are no high rises there.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread. I so wish I had had the opportunity of experiencing the "old Dubai" because I know I would have loved it. I'm sat here imagining what life must have been like back then. Is there any place here that you would say reminds you of the Old Dubai?

I first lived in Dubai as a child in 95 back in the days when Chicago Beach Villas stood where the Madinat is and Jebel Ali was way out in the sticks, and I absolutely loved it (but I do still love my time here now as well) and always knew I would come back. Hi Bella, did you live in CBV? People just loved to live there and cried when they had to vacate... I was part of the team building place starting from 1976 - 1979 and we had a ball. Cried when it was pulled down - but then, I love the Madinat as well! O M G We were the first family to move into CBV. Memories. Great memories! Gather your husband or father was then with one of the big companies that were "privileged" to be able to rent into CBV... then still "in the middle of nowhere"! Remember the parties and "high life" that was going on there... Yes, My father had a good position....and we had some great parties....that beach witnessed so much :\::\:

I miss the old days ..... not sure if anyone mentioned it already but do you remember the old weekend was actually Thursday / Friday it was only in more recent times they changed it to Fri/Sat so it was easier for business. Ohhh yes and didn't you used to get your windscreen washed at the lights and you were always wondering if they could do it before the lights changed lol Miss the old days, too. And I remember when weekend was Friday. Full Stop. And if necessary you popped into office on Fridays as well... Now, wouldn't that provoke an absolute outcry from nowadays expat?

I arrived in July 1997 also Arancher! We must have crossed paths at Fibbers or the Bunker. I remember going out on a Tuesday or Thursday night and being able to go from Fibbers to the Irish Village to Bur Dubai to the Alamo all in one evening -no traffic and cheap taxis. Just after I arrived they introduced Dubai Taxis which was a fleet of mercedes with leather seats! Still only cost 10 dhs to go anywhere.
