Yes they did wash the windscreens, it was a mad rush for them to finish before lights went green. Remember them also selling single roses sometimes also. Thanx for confirming that, was starting to wonder if I was imagining it lol

They used to sell the Gulf News at the traffic lights and you had to ruffle around to find your dirham/s b4 the lights changed, didn't they also wash the windscreens too? Local used to stop on the flyovers and roundabouts for a chat :) lol

Yep! With a 9 month old DD too! From Dubai, across Saudi into Jordan (visited Amman, Petra), Syria (Damascus) and got a ferry from Tartus to Thessaloniki. Drove across Greece (visited Athens, Delphi, Meteora) and got a ferry from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi. Called in to Florence, Venice, San Marino, then into Innsbruck, Munich and a few more places I've forgotten! Wonderful trip - would I do it now - no way!!! Wow that sounds fantastic!! Actually it sounds like the sort of thing that Michael Palin would do!!! :):) My husband and I were planning to do a similar trip next year back to the UK but I suspect that our plans may be off now!

Shopping in Abal Hassans, worrying your Cadburys chocolate would be taken off you at customs, along with you M&S clothes, even though labels had been cut out...... Buying the latest 'tapes' in Satwa and going to Anabelles, pancho villas, 221 B Baker Street and Lucifers on a weekend. Taking forever to get to school on the bus on a morning..... passing millions of fish on the way lead out drying on the desert on the way in. The Iranian hospital road (al Wasl) is still the Iranian hospital road to me, Defence Roundabout will always be a landmark and we were just talking about good old Bobbi Batista the other day with her unfortunate eyes on 24 hr CNN reporting the Gulf War and running out counting back the planes each night in the garden when they would announce how many were safely returning after war operations to their 'secret' airbase in Dubai. I could go on and on...... Much better! edited by Solo on 27/04/2011

My parents visited Dubai in spring 1982 while my Mum was pregnant with me. They came to visit us early this year and couldn't believe the changes. Jebel Ali spa resort had just opened back then and they were one of the first guests to stay there. They also remember that there used to be people who would come out and sweep the road crossings. All the traffic lights would turn red and only turn green again once all the sand had been swept away and you could see the lines on the road again. A few people here have mentioned that Dubai has lost it's soul, I can understand that people feel that way, but IMO there is still plenty of soul to be found here. Since we have moved here we have felt very welcome and have made some truly special friends in a short amount of time!

I've been reading the posts - lots of happy memories. We moved to Abu Dhabi in 1996 - DH, DD and DS1 and DS2 ! Our youngest DD was born in 2000 at the Corniche hospital. So much has changed in all the Emirates since the 90's. I remember watching channel 33. And we joined Star network when it started. Lots of streets and roads with no footpaths just sand and dirt. Shopkeepers would put carpet down in front of their shops to stop the dust and sand! Pushing a pram was no joy :( The highway to Dubai was a nightmare journey usually only undertaken during daylight - too many twists and turns and those horried speed humps !! We lived in a Villa in Manaseer 90,000dhms a year. We joined the British Club and the only shopping mall was the Abu Dhabi Co-op mall in TCA - Tourist Club area - across the road from where the Abu Dhabi Mall now stands. We used to travel to Dubai once a month for our main shopping at City Center - Carrefour had just opened and IKEA - woohoo for us and a stop at ACE hardwarre for DH. We always stopped at the Hardrock cafe on our way home for dinner. I always remember the customs officer at the airport looking amused at my suitcase full of grocery items that I had bought back from Oz ! and how they used to take the childrens videos to check and you would pick them up later. Al Ain was so quiet - perfect for a weekend getaway. Thanks for starting this thread - have enjoyed and yes I miss what once was. Julieanne dont forget madinet zayed and hamden centre for shopping....!!! and the old souq too! yep pavements you had a choice do you push pushchair in road or 2ft deep sand!

ha, another one! Before you had to say "050" before your mobile number! Because everybody's number was 050! Now that one was as recent as my time there! :D People who asked for my number used to look at me like I was a complete idi*t when I started with "050" and paused for a second for them to type that bit in. :D

Going to the top of Jebel Hafeet with a 6 inch B & W TV that ran on 12 v so that we could watch North and South as Al Ain did not pick up Dubai 33 and Abu Dhabi TV was hopeless even Mickey Mouse was censored kissing Minnie :) Picking up from the local video shop a very poor copy of Darling Buds of May on 3 cassettes totally hooked could not go to bed until we had watched them all. A traffic policeman who when you had gone through a radar jumped out in front of your car to give your the speeding fine soon found out how good your brakes were! Then as they pulled you over to write the ticket making your child cry loudly which they couldn't cope with so they let you go with a warning. Buying all the Bisto when it came into the very small Spinneys in Al Ain. My mother bringing red cross type parcels of Imperial Leather Soap. All the American service personnel based in Al Ain during the first Gulf War with their Yummy Yummy hot chocolate mix; opening doors for your saying Good Morning Ma'am

In the mid 80's we lived near Safa park and I can remember our dog chasing a cat across the Abu Dhabi Road (now the SZR) around lunchtime one day. I just walked over to get him from the other side and not sure I saw a car in either direction! A good weekend was Thursday night at Pancho Villa's (Harvey and Sheila singing), Friday brunch at friends house and everything stopped on a Friday night to watch Dallas on CH33..... Best of all Champage was Dhs 22 a bottle in the duty free. edited by frampton on 27/04/2011

Sharjah Dubai road was a dual carriageway sand both sides an ambulance parked in Al Mulla Plaza and a police car at the sharjah border. We had to inform either of them if there was a car crash on the road ( before mobile phones) The road to A Dhabi used to be terrible again dual carriageway with huge humps and round abounds every few kms. All roads were very dangerous at night as camels were sharing the roads with the cars...do I miss those days? YES. The 1st Gulf war the airports shut down we decided to stay against our consulate's advise and shut all windows/exhaust fans....with tape to protect us in case of chemical bombs from Iraq!!!!. yep the road from abu dhabit to dubai as i would come the other way, when we first came out my hubs was working on that road to upgrade it and all i got from people was take away the speed bumps.... hence why it took him 3 hours commute from 13th st in abu dhabi to the border interchange! each way..... and the different level in the roads when they were updating it, but of course you couldnt safely drive along the road with 1.5 lanes because the trees were overhanging over the fast lane.

I never saw Mozzies in Dubai but when I lived in Ajman opposite the sea I used to get eaten alive during the high humidity times. I remember sitting on my computer working with towels wrapped around my ankles because thats where they used to attack me. The blighters still managed to get me.

...and another memory. When Defence Roundabout was actually a roundabout  Yes and when all the huge flyovers on Sh Zayed Rd were bridges with 2 small (single lane) roundabouts. Before the Safa flyover was redone, the traffic used to back up in the AD direction and sometimes take up 2 lanes. Talking about going down memory lane, I was telling the kids about life before the tv remote control and even before house phones became the norm;they found it hard to imagine. When I was young our neighbour had a pay phone installed in her house and the whole street used to go to make calls. When my eldest brother got married he had a phone in his house and it was a night out to go to his house and get a call from a relative overseas - I really was very young at the time:-)

The Bold and the Beautiful on channel 33, when they accidently would show the same episode again or forget all together to put it on (and we would be devastated), it had no kissing or funny business so some episodes were very short. I remember being very shocked when I saw it in the US with all the bits in. Have a look at this site it is very well done http://www.dubaiasitusedtobe.com/ Then the gulf war started we had 24 hour CNN with Bobby Batista and her cross eyed glare!! Jones and Penson at the ladies night at Dubai Country Club. Hilarious.

101 Villas, Thunderbowl was Safestway, had booze license for Sharjah, Ikea at Karama, only 5 cars on the beach on a friday ;) only cinema showing English movies was Al Nasr, everyone talked to you, steak dhs19 kg, average 3 bed in jumeirah dhs60,000, no maid deposit, no queues, cheap electronics, 15 chilldren max per class, no keeping up wih the Jones or plastic scarecrow looking women or aggresive arrogant men, so to answer the OP's question, YES but every city develops and evolves, somethings for the better and other things not so much. Now there is far more for children and adults alike, to do. But I think,as a family, we had more quality time together because there was less to do!! I still love this City, but because it has grown so much it is like any other large city, cold and indifferent. Gone are the days that Locals would stop and chat to you, and invite you to their homes, we never heard of muder, rape or robberies. I'm sure it did happen but it was not something that happened on a regular basis. Fab post, hit the nail on the head so to speak. Thank you x Yes, those were the days, dorset diva...

Oh I loved Bold and the Beautiful, best program on Ch33 in my opinion. Also loved Martha Stewart, who they used to stick on quite a bit as well as some woman doing a program about making things like table decorations from egg boxes etc. Cant believe we really only had that channel for so many years. I eventually got Star TV, I think that was one of the first english sat services on offer, although could be wrong.

Cutting all my M and S labels out of my underwear for fear it would be confiscated on entry - still dont know if this actually happened to anyone or was just a rumour. Yes, did this ever actually happen in the UAE? I remember coming across a mention of it in a Hilary Mantel novel set in the 1980s in Saudi Arabia, but assumed it was specific to that place and time.

Great thread! I arrived in Dubai in 1989 and some of my memories are; Panchos on a `friday night for their 7 - 11 specials, all drinks were 11 dirhams and all starters were 7! Only two western type clothes shops, one in Al Ghurair centre and the other was Elle on the beach road which was out of my price range. Most clothes had to be made. Going to the George and Dragon every Thursday after work and knowing nearly all the people in there. Cutting all my M and S labels out of my underwear for fear it would be confiscated on entry - still dont know if this actually happened to anyone or was just a rumour. Thatchers Bartering for all electrical goods in Bur Dubai as there were no fixed price shops. Haggling with taxi drivers before you got in the taxi. Fond memories

In reply to desertprincess - Yes!!! I find a lot of people very, very sad constantly moaning and not able to solve the most simple issues/ problems, and cannot bear people who come to Dubai and want for example to have UK novelty nights etc. I remember when the Rose and Crown near the Intercontinental wanted to start a quiz night and there was almost a rebellion as no-one was remotely interested! Particularly as it was largely frequented by the very hard working offshore boys who did not need their drinking time interrupted by a quiz!!! Why leave the UK if you need to remind yourself constantly of the place? Just wondering... do any of you old timers get annoyed with newer expats constantly moaning about this, that or the other? edited by Azaiba on 26/04/2011 edited by Azaiba on 26/04/2011
