Please help.

I love the smell of Oud and I gave in on an impulse buy and bought one from one of those Oud/Arabic perfume stalls in MCC.

I bought the (don't know what to call it....vase?) I bought the perfumed incense ? (really sorry, don't know what each bit is called) and the guy at the stall showed me a pack of coal to buy. He said I'd be able to get it in C4.

Ok so I went to C4, bought the coal (its called incense coal for oud) and bought matches for it.

The problem - I can't light the coal? It just doesn't light? what am I doing wrong?

I had some non-odour coal lighter fuel used for bbqs and put a tiny drop on the coal. It lit but doesn't really work well.

Can I please get clear instructions as to what I need to do? Is there a special lighter I need for this coal?

step by step instructions please as I'm as dumb as anything trying to figure this out.

I bought one of those gas gun lighters. They sort of blast the flame out and hard enough to light up the coals - but you have to place it directly on the coal. Once the coal is hot enough (you will see the red inside the coal) then place the bukhoor or oud sticks on it. If using bukhoor you need to break it up and carefully place it on top of the hot coal. I used to use a lighter but noticed that it takes really long to light up the coal and you stand there with a hot lighter and not much joy with the coal. You can get those gas guns from any smokers shop. I have also seen them at Lulu in Al Barsha. Enjoy... it makes the house smell great! HTH

LOL thanks ladies. Ok so C4 only had this one pack of coal. No other types. So it makes sense that I bought a pack that needs fire and not matches. Final question then - where can I buy coal suitable for matches? Thanks - big big help :) Sorry - tried and tried and tried with a lighter - doesn't work :( edited by Dxb.Fairy on 31/01/2011

You got the fire one. There is one that needs to be lit on fire, that is the one you bought. you can light it with a lighter (easier on the stove but will light with lighters)

Not sure if I can help you. The coals (looks compacted) that I bought for my frankincense light up easily with just regular short matches, of course they don't last long. So may be the kind you have last longer like real charcoal which requires actual fire to burn it longer, so having a ceramic top stove doesn't help :( Hopefully someone can help you sort this out.

it should light with a normal lighter....... as long as you light a little bit of it, shoud be fine. I usually try and light 2 or 3 corners.

turn the small ring on and place the coal there, come back in 5 mins and put in the oud burner (use metal tongs)

if you have a gas stove, hold it over the gas flame.
