Did anyone NOT get the BCG vaccination for their newborn? I didn't want to get any vaccinations at birth for our newborn as I had planned to follow the Dr. Sears schedule but he doesn't mention BCG because it's not something they give in North America. Any thoughts?

The office which issues birth certificates. Having been told *twice* by the Preventive Medicine clinic that vaccinations were not legally required, the birth cert office then informed us that they were and we were then hauled over the coals by the Preventive Medicine people (yes, the same people who had told us they were not legally required) for trying to break the law. Not a happy story, but no way around it for us. I believe I'm not the only one to have been forced into vaccinating shortly after birth, but I know that others have had much more straightforward experiences so hopefully all will go well for you, CoffeeGal, and you will be able to follow the vaccination schedule that you choose. xx

I was refused a birth certificate until my son had been vaccinated, so it can indeed be the case. Refused by who BFC? When was that? Vaccinations are not required by law so that's appalling that 'they' did that to you. :(

I'd like to see them try and refuse a birth certificate to me!! There will be a HUGE uproar since I'm not getting any vaccinations until our baby boy is 2 months and I will want the birth certificate before that. As to Chocochic, we're planning to move back to Canada and since the vaccination isn't required there I don't see the point in getting our baby stuck with unnecessary needles and vaccinations especially given that this one often creates a sore, weeping wound site. It's a very personal decision for parents and there's lots of concerns about vaccination safety these days. I can't believe everything I'm reading about the Vitamin K injections and whether they are necessary. It's interesting and there are good arguments for both sides so it's best to be informed and feel good about your own personal decision. As a child my parents enrolled me in a vaccination trial program in Canada and the company ended up not using sterile practices and infected a bunch of children in Quebec with HIV. I had to get tested although we lived on the West Coast and the children in my group were "safe". You can never be too careful.

My DD is 12 months and receiving her's next week. We live in Canada but come to Dubai on and off to visit family. We don't need the vaccine there because they screen for tuberculosis whereas in this part of the world they don't and hence it is recommended getting it. Because we may move here at some future point, we have decided to get the vaccine for her. I personally feel, it is always best to get vaccines, especially the recommended ones. Why wouldn't you?

I had my baby girl done at 8 weeks, she was fine about it but had an awful discharging sore at the site for months afterwards & still has the scar, my friends' baby got a cherry tomato sized reaction- not nice. I decided that I would go ahead & vaccinate, as i wasn't having it done at the same time as any others & it is just one more thing I can hopefully protect her from. But I didn't fully understand the timeline of the TB vaccine, but she should hopefully unofficially still have cover in later life as this reaction seemed to 'take' well...

you dont have to have it here in order to get a certificate, but i would highly recommend it, i was told years ago by friends who worked at the[b'> brit embassy and they said that all families would need to be vaccinated before they would allow them into the country [/b'>etc due to the fact that there are so many different nationalities and habits etc. Sorry busybee...just trying to understand what you mean here. The British Embassy said they would *need* to be vaccinated before being allowed into which country? The UAE or back to the UK? *Need* as in it's compulsory? Or just highly recommended? I would be surprised if any embassy can impose compulsory vaccinations on anyone. Clarity is important for parents trying to make these decisions.

Any thoughts? My youngest daughter did not have the BCG (or HepB) at birth. It's all a very personal choice and as long as we're all making informed decisions, it's really nobody's business. :D As far as local rules go, some will tell you that the baby must have the vacc's at birth before a birth certificate or passport or visa can be issued. This is NOT the case. No vaccinations are required by law in UAE. Hope that helps.
