Do you find you have good internet speed in the Dubai Marina area? I read there are 2 companies to choose from. Which internet provider are you with? Is the internet speed good enough to download TV shows?
Appreciate any advice - thanks:)

I wonder if you had a VPN if you could stream TV from the USA. Has anyone ever tried that? Yes, works fine. We never watch local TV, it's a complete waste of money. Thanks Edna.Welthorpe I had gathered the local TV was pretty hopeless. Do you get only the free to air TV from the USA or can you get cable as well? edited by jamhind on 10/04/2012 edited by jamhind on 10/04/2012

I heard that depending on what building your apartment is in - you often don't get a choice of provider You NEVER get a choice of a provider. Thanks for the replies. Simpleasabc can you download the show to a hardrive and then watch it later? Would that solve the problem? I have already heard that the speed they say you will get will not be the actual speed. It's a bit pointless advertising a speed that isn't available. Oh well I am just ecstatic that we can download some TV. That's better than I thought it would be:)

I just got my 18yr old DS to look at the the Du website. He said it looks like they don't have any download limits. Is that true? That would be wonderful. Fingers crossed:) Theres no download limits in Dubai. Only internet speed limits. Because of the buffering, it can sometimes take me double the time to watch a streaming tv prog than its actual length and we've got the second broadest band poss with Du (who told us there was no point getting the widest band as that width is not actually provided).

I heard that depending on what building your apartment is in - you often don't get a choice of provider. We aren't moving to Dubai for a few months yet so I don't know where we will live and which internet provider we will use. I'm just trying to find out as much as I can before we go. And everyone on this forum has been so helpful. The more questions I am finding answers too - the less concerns I have about going. I have heard Etisalat and OSN TV are both pretty poor. But with unlimited downloads you could really just stream TV from anywhere really. I wonder if you had a VPN if you could stream TV from the USA. Has anyone ever tried that?

We have eLife through Etisalat (no choice of providers for us) so we have TV, landline and internet bundled into a package called Triple Play. With this you can choose your internet speed and TV package (so whether you prefer movies, sport etc). Package prices vary according to internet speed and TV package chosen. I would imagine it's very similar with Du. Some people don't get a bundle and just choose landline and internet and get TV through OSN and a satellite dish.

Thanks Sanddy_Dogg that's where we looked. We just thought we must have been missing something. Even though the limits are generous in Oz there are still limits. This is great news for running my business but also for streaming TV from home. What do you do for TV Sanddy_Dogg? Do you stream TV from home or just use the TV in Dubai?

We've never had download limits or incurred any extra costs for downloading a lot of stuff in a month. Go to du.ae and you'll find package info and costs there. You can also look at etisalat.ae for the same info.

Do you find you have good internet speed in the Dubai Marina area? I read there are 2 companies to choose from As has been said, there is no actual choice. Your building will be supplied with internet by either Etisalat or Du, so you take what you're given. In the newer developments, including the Marina, it's almost exclusively Du. Supposedly the system is being opened up so everyone will have the choice of either Etisalat or Du regardless of where they live, but that's still some way off.

Well depending where you live, you might not have a choice. It'll either be Etisalat or DU. You never really get the speed they advertise, but hey ho. I have the fastest connection you can get with DU and it's still sluggish at times. Downloads can take a while depending on file size, but streaming is alright, might stop once in a while.
