In the US vanilla extract has to be 35% alcohol to be called vanilla extract, it has something to do with the extraction process (which uses alcohol). I have seen vanilla flavouring here in the UAE but no real vanilla extract (presumably because of the alcohol), flavouring and essence are often not made from real vanilla.

I have some vanilla extract which I brought from the UK myself but am cooking for some muslim friends so would like to find some halal vanilla extract. I have found some, in Australia, but would like to check it is not already available here somewhere that I don't know about before paying for shipping.

So if anyone has by some miracle seen halal vanilla extract here please let me know!

On another note I'm need some Wilton cake sparkles (certified Kosher and my Muslim friends are okay with that - it means the E numbers are not pork or beetles), I haven't actually started looking yet has anyone seen this anywhere?

TIA

You can also use a vanilla pod and scrape out the seeds, gives a lovely flavour. I do a lot of baking for my DD's nursery so steer clear of vanilla extract so what I do is have vanilla pods in my sugar and they give the sugar a vanilla flavour. Everytime I use a pod for the seeds I pop the empty pod into the sugar pot. Me too - but how do you stop the sugar forming a lump? Never had that problem, I do make sure the pod has been really well scraped out. I also do a lot of baking so it never sits for more than 2 weeks at a time.

Fosters Clark vanilla extract is alcoholfree . You can buy from any super market. Foster Clark is vanilla essence not extract, it doesn't actually contain any real vanilla the ingredients even state 'artificial vanilla flavouring'. I will try some of the other places mentioned, thanks for advice.

Any alcohol in the vanilla extract will evaporate off during the cooking anyway.

Wilton cake sparkles you can get at Tavola. They keep it behind the counter at the cash register so you have to specifically request for it.

There has been some thread on here before about making vanilla extract - i think if i remember you use glycerine which is available and water it down - found the thread. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=114476 I just keep topping mine up with empty vanilla beans (probably need to add more glycerine by now too)
