I cannot for the life of me understand why, when they design roads they think only a handful of people will use it daily. Who on earth is responsible for the design and construction of Dubai roads?
The sheer weight of traffic on Hessa Street every morning just leaves me crawling to work. What used to take 10 minutes now takes me 35.
How can a 2 lane road handle all the traffic coming from Emirates Rd, Al Khail Rd, Motor City and AR?
Tomake it worse, it seems that 90% of people think its ok to just queue jump which just makes the whole journey more stressful
There really is a lack of common sense here.

One of the reasons I was not too enthusiastic about the Business bay extension was traffic. Imagine if construction occured across Szr, Wasl, and Jumeirah roads. Spoke too soon ! It definitely sounds exciting but I hope we do not have too many disruptions :) http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/dubai-creek-extension-project-canal-to-pass-under-new-bridge-on-shaikh-zayed-road-1.1238576

2/10/2013 11:33:03 Sorry to hijack this in my own interests, but we are looking somewhere to live atm and need to get to DESC and DC - we had thought MC, AR, etc to be equidistant - this thread makes me think maybe we should be closer to DC and have a longer (but quicker) commute to DESC in the "wrong" direction... Or is it actually the case that traffic is dreadful everywhere at 7.30???! not sure how to copy these things. We live in the Ranches and our child took the bus to DC. You can then try to live around Savannah or Mirador and then exit AR out the exit by the school and that 'should ' be an easyish run to DESC?? I try not to leave here when the rest of the world is travelling. I am afraid of what I might end up doing. Good luck. Even with the traffic on Hessa St. the journey from Motor City to DC takes 15 minutes- less time than it takes from Umm Suquiem to DC as the Wellington traffic is awful too. The difficulty is joining Hessa St from Al Khail Rd as people will not let you in. Fortunately it only a small stretch of blocked road. edited by amy on 02/10/2013 Thank you - that's a relief!

can you go down Um Suqeim Street instead of Hessa St? Even if it's a long way round for a short cut. The traffic down USS seems to be much better now since they have taken away a set of lights.

Here's my secret (learned only from DH who would rather take a longer route but continue to be "free-flowing") Instead of Hessa St exit, continue to Al Kharmila street (behind Springs) - we actually do a U turn at the Hessa st junction because we're coming from the opposite end of Al Khail so turn back on ourselves but if you're coming from AR or Motor City, just keep going past Hessa St. Turn down Al Kharmila st and it's pretty clear, at the first traffic light turn right onto Al Asayel st and it flows freely all the way down to hit Hessa St through a tunnel and you reach Hessa right before the speed camera where it is free flowing. Alternatively you can cruise down Kharmila st all the way to back of the Greens and cut into DIC through there or even thru the back of the Lakes. Bet it will be gridlocked tomorrow now I've said this! Nooooooooooooooooooo! That's my sneaky route! If it's busy next time I'm going to blame you ;)

Same problem at the Safa Park junction. I never get a clear run at it these days and am starting to take circuitous routes to avoid it. I actually got stopped by policeman going from Safa Junction to SZR this am so that people at the open u turn could go. I was late - i am usually at work by this time and couldn't believe the difference in traffic. The police is there only for Al Ittihade private school horrendous traffic jam the parents/ maids/ drivers create every day morning and after noon.

Hoots, I too have been known to scream at people in traffic, good for you! Bet it will be gridlocked tomorrow now I've said this! I was using that route and it was great because It was a straight road into JLT. Now they have shut the outer entrance to JLT so you have to enter via the first exit which means I have to go into Media City and then make a U turn at the roadabout by Media One and come back on myself. Also, I was getting caught up in the DIA school traffic on that road. All the selfish parents who think its ok to park their cars in traffic lanes because they are too lazy to use the car park.

Im actually so sick of the traffic that it is making me want to leave Dubai. I get so angry in the morning. I am trying to be calm but when I have sat in the queue and then I see someone push in, I lose it. this morning I actually got out my car and started shouting at this guy who just assumed he had the right to push in. This type of behaviour is not normal and im not particularly happy by my actions. But don't you have "to let" someone push in for them to be able to? Saying that i need to get on to a road yesterday and immediately do a uturn - so had to "push in" across 4 lanes of traffic..... sometimes, you have little choice. edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 02/10/2013 you cant stop people pushing in if that is their intention... If there is no room to, they can't. if you leave a cars length then why not? I dont leave a cars length infront of me but if the car in front does then people will fly up the road and push straight in. Regardless of your technicalities its wrong and its frustrating

That's the point I tried to make in your other thread foolnightsleep, sorry if it wasn't clear, but I was saying you need to be going against commute traffic as much as possible, otherwise you can get stuck at places for a good 15-20 mins thus doubling (or worse) your commute. Generally speaking it's better heading east and north in the morning, so yes, your commute to DESC if you live near DC should be better than the other way around.

I have been here for 9 years now. I have been saying the same thing about these roads for years. My husband now has stated that he will not listen to me talk about the traffic anymore. It makes me so angry, I should think someone should have been fired for not anticipating the traffic coming from AR, MC etc. it doesn't take a genius to multiply the amount of buildings and the total apts etc. I should think there is a simply calculation that most governments use when they plan their cities. thank you for listening! I agree, they build developments and think about the transport needs after. Every development should have a traffic impact study and the developers should have to pay for any new roads that the development necessitates. So much money and time was spent on Hessa streets and the road works at the Greens. Traffic in general has increased which is a good sign for the economy but there' so little planning with problems only identified when things get really bad and then they are fixed in isolation rather than part of an overall plan. The round about at the Ranches was fixed but then we came to a halt at the Al Khail round about. That's been sorted, now the bottle neck is further along on Um Seqeim St, near Lulus. The next problem will be when all the houses along Um Seqeim St for locals are occupied and people are trying to get out. So silly to have 2 major flyovers along a main road (AR & Al Khail RAs) with traffic lights in between.

I agree 100% on the Hessa St nightmare. I only take this occasionally but I can imagine for commuters, this is a terrible daily experience. There are so many problem areas around Dubai. And it seems to be getting worse in places?? A number of the SZR exits are jammed constantly (exit near Dubai Garden Centre, exit at Al Manara, exit near Dnata/Em Holidays and the exit off SZR to Jumeriah where I sometimes see cars stopped in traffic going all the way over SZR). Al Wasl has become unbearable most of the daytime now. And for those going to Jebel Ali during peak times, why on earth is there a one lane bridge going over SZR then a small one lane road leading to the little roundabout? Im actually so sick of the traffic that it is making me want to leave Dubai. I get so angry in the morning. How anyone thought the minimal number of exits and entrances and 5 lanes dropping down to 2 would be sufficient for that many high rise mixed use buildings it beyond me. It's a simple math problem. i feel your pain, after I have crawled to work on Hessa street I then sit in the JLT traffic in the evening trying to get out of there. JLT is a nightmare! I feel for you!

The whole presence of a speed camera at an abnormally low speed is detrimental to traffic flow. Why build a nice 4 lane road and then have a camera flashing at 80 kph? We have 3 nice freeways, but do not have adequate smaller freeways to connect between the 3. That is why getting on Al Khail from SZR is anything but smooth. You have one lane to exit to Knowledge village, Tecom, Greens, Barsha and Al Khail Completiong of the Umm Suqeim freeway may make things better Agree. major highways which then pull off to tiny sideroads are the issue, which is exactly what is happening with Hessa street. I have noticed all the traffic coming off the Al Khail rd onto Hessa street is all from Sharjah (because of the number plates) all the traffic comnig from the opposite side of Al Khail onto Hessa is JVC/JVT/Green Community and then from the top of Hessa street you have all the AR, Motor City people. All of the above are making their way towards Abu Dhabi/Marina/DIC way. How on earth can that many people travel on one tiny rd?

The trouble is the ill-conceived speed camera near SZR that causes everyone to jam on their brakes. Also, they need to make a flyover rather than have that traffic light near Gems World. I guess they are hoping that when Um Suqueim gets fixed, more traffic will go that way?
