Hi! I'm pregnant and without insurance. The great thing is that you are not stuck with a hospital or clinic you don't like and can try something else. I would recommend you ( if you are healthy person living healthy life) to follow essential scans and check-ups (as if you take a package from the hospital/clinic you might pay for something you don't really require) : Week8: Fetal Heart Beat and antenatal screen Week12: Nuchal Translucensy Scan (Down syndrom) Week20: Morphology Scan Week25: GCT, CBC tests Week30: Doppler Scan and then as per your pregnancy. By now with all above (excluding Doppler) I ended up paying AED5445 including consultation charges/routine tests (I visited private clinics in Healthcare City and on Al-Wasl Road). I think, it's not too bad comparing with antenatal hospital packages, which normally do not include big scans (like Down Syndrome and Doppler etc.) in their packages; so, you would have to pay lots of extra. My obgyn from private clinic is arranging delivery in City Hospital. Charges: Normal delivery: AED 14500 (Hospital charges, Doctor charges, Baby package) Cesarean: AED 27000 (Hospital charges, Doctor charges, Baby package) So, without insurance, it's expected to be spent around AED 23000 for normal pregnancy. Please, don't take my post as paradigm and contact hospitasl and clinics to COMPARE their rates. I've done a lot of research and came up to understanding, that the best place to deliver is City Hospital and the best clinic to be observed is private ( like ''Femiclinic'' in Healthcare City is great, ''Cooper'' on Al-Wasl, ''Healthbay'' in Umm-Suqeim etc). Also, make sure, if you go to a private clinic, that your obgyn is authorize to deliver in City Hospital (or at hospital you plan to give birth). Good Luck to you and your little one! edited by longinjumeirah on 13/05/2014 hi ! i know this thread is very old , but i needed to know ..... @longinjumeirah , did you finally deliver at city hospital and what were the charges ? i seem to be getting different info from different people .... i called City hospital and asked for their charges , they told me its around 13K ... but some friends have told me it normally goes upto 35k + for normal delivery !! how much did you end up paying ? I paid approx Dhs 15K for each of my deliveries at City Hospital. However, my doctor was not at City, so I paid an additional Dhs 5K to her for the actual delivery (so total was 20K). I had normal deliveries but with epidurals (which are approx 3K extra). Your friends who paid Dhs 35K may have had a full package (i.e. prenatal screenings, etc. plus the delivery itself). Or they may have had other extras (epidural, forceps, etc.). Also, the VIP rooms on the top floor cost a lot more than the normal rooms, so that could add to the cost. Finally, there are additional costs for the baby too if you want circumcision, the hearing test, etc. The best thing to do is to go to City Hospital and speak with them. Ask for a full list of their prices (which they are obliged to provide by law) and also what is included and what is charged as extra/separately. All the best with your delivery! :)

I had a harrowing time. The doctor was perfectly fine, till everything was normal. But, with a slight perceived complication during my pregnancy, she panicked big time. She only intention there after was to get rid of me and she started suggesting me to go to another hospital or even go to India. Thankfully, I started seeing Dr. Jasbir at Zulkeha and she was a big respite! She is very cool headed and infact told me that everything was very normal. I finally delivered my baby under her care. I normally would not have voiced my opinion on a public platform like this one. But, almost the same thing is getting repeated with a friend of mine too. So, I thought this might help someone.

Hi LonginJumeirah, Thanks for that detailed update. But can you please help me with the below? This si the list of scans/tests included in the maternity package in Al Rafa Hospital, Mankhool. We were thinking of going for this package until we read your post about other critical scans, whcih I believe are not included in the below. Will you be able to tell me how many of the below tests/scans would be mandatory? Ofcourse, there might be different scenarios, but considering a normal healthy pregnancy. We just want to check if taking a package makes it any easier or it is better to pay on the go.. ServiceMax Qty Op Obstetric Consultation 12 Urine Analysis 3 Ostetr Ultra Sound Scan 4 CBC 3 CTG 2 Blood Grouping & Typing 1 lood Sugar (F) & (PPBS) 1 VDRL 1 HIV 1 HBSAG 1 HCV 1 TSH 1 GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) 1 Urine C&S 1 HVS C&S 1 Rubella IGG 1 Rubella IGM 1 Double Marker Hi Mezi, From what I see in the list- there's none of the essential scans included. There are 4 Ultra Sounds, but they are not as essential as Morfology and Doppler US. Also 13-15 listings from the bottom are part of your first Antenatal Screening (cost in private clinic is AED1100). So, the rest AED3000 you will be paying for 12 consultations (a way too many and, as it's a part of a package, they'll be really short ones), urine tests (in private clinic it's included in consultation) and 4 US scans (again, on top of regular US you need important scans); by my 7th month I did only 2 regular scans. If you'll take this package, be ready to pay few extras: Nuchal Translucency scan (Down syndrome) and blood test- AED700+AED650 Morphology US- AED1000 Fetal Doppler Scan- AED800 So, as per my estimations, it doesn't make huge difference, if you take package from the hospital or attend a private clinic with obgyn spending with you not less than 40 minutes every time you visit her/him. The only thing, private clinic's obgyn delivers only in particular hospitals (Medcare, City Hospital etc), so delivery itself could cost you a bit more.

Could you share with us the names of Hospitals with good maternity and OB departments and any specific doctors that you may have used. Medical cost are covered by insurance so cost is not a factor. Also, are there any reputed pre natal classes that you may recommend? Many thanks in advance.

Hi mommies, did you know where are insurance policies that cover your baby as soon as he/she is born, so in case of any medical complications or congenital anomalies you wont have to worry. The benefit its called "NO new-born baby underwriting".I got my insurance through Topsurance.com they are super helpful.:) Hi, So, even without maternity insurance, they are going to cover your baby in case of birth complications? I must say, it's very rare, that insurance company is so generous. I'm going for Integra. They are ready to cover baby from the day of birth, though won't guarantee any labor complications reimbursement.

I had insurance but did not have maternity cover. It was my second baby and I had to make up my mind where is best in terms of care and money. Enquired a lot and finally decided on Ajman GMC. I stay in Dubai, work in Dubai so Ajman was a tricky choice but we still did it. This was in March. I had a good experience there.....care was good and doctors are good...it isn't fancy fancy....but decent, clean, nurses are nice etc.. Normal Delivery is around 7k and C sec is 9500 NICU charges if required are AED650 per day...and the care is really good edited by Imamme on 13/05/2014 edited by Imamme on 13/05/2014

HI Ladies, Myself and DH are expecting as well, now in my 8th week. Even we do not have insurance and were looking at various options. Even went to a few hospitals to check on the rates and packages they offer. [u'>[b'>Baraha:[/b'>[/u'> No Antenatal Package. Each scan costs 500 (It was 30AED which increased now :S ) Normal Delivery: 7000 (max 2 days) C Section: 10000 (max 3 days) They will not entertain consultation if you go after 12 weeks, meaning if you are planning to do your pre pregnancy check ups and scans there, you need to register befroe 12 weeks. [u'>[b'>Al Rafa:[/b'>[/u'> Antenatal starting at 2000 from 28 weeks 2750 - they call it travel package (for those planning to deliver in their home country or elsewhere, they provide just the antenatal until 7th month) 4000 - from week 12 until end (this includes max 4 scans and blood tests and other tests that is usually done during pregnancy) Normal Delivery: 8700 +upto 2500 for the new born C Section: 13000 + upto 2500 for the new born [b'>Latifa:[/b'>[u'>[/u'> Antenatal: 5500 Normal: 7000 C Section: 10000 The only hiccup here is in order to deliver here, you need to do your antenatal as well. They do not take up only delivery cases. But Latifa is the best considering they have the best NICU, various levels starting at 2200 for Level 1. We got the info, but kinda confused as to where now. Just realized delivery in my home country is less than 1/3rd the cost here :) Ofcourse when you dont have insurance, you need to have a backup plan in case of any complications which cannot be predicted always. Hope this helps and Good Luck to all Mommies-to-be :)

All my nieces and nephews were born at Al Zahra hospital in Sharjah. I've delivered 2 children without maternity insurance at Latifa Hospital. One child was re-admitted to Latifa at 7 days old, for 12 nights in the pediatric ward, and the cost was minimal. If money were tighter, I would consider Baraha Hospital, funded by the federal gov't in Abu Dhabi, rather than Al Zahra in Sharjah, solely based on traffic. I visited a friend who delivered at Baraha and it wasn't much different from Latifa or Dubai Hospital.

I went through this during the GFC when I got made redundant at 34.5 weeks pregnant, long story short, I was going to deliver at Med care hospital, but the company canceled my insurance/visa and when I checked out there rates, it was about AED10K for normal delivery, so I decided to jump on a plane instead- fat belly 36 weeks preggers (with doctors clearance) and gave birth at a government hospital in Australia, which worked out perfectly for me. Goodluck- I am sure there are plenty of cheaper options, but that was just my experience back then xx Sounds sensible! Glad things worked out well for you, SD.

Hi I would recommend Latifa. Not the cheapest, but defintiely worth it in case something goes wrong. Their nicu is the best and still much cheaper than AH or City. I delivered there 3 times despite having insurance which would easily have covered a private delivery. Incidentally, there is *always* a risk involved in having a baby here - even if you have insurance. People often assume that their policy will cover anything but many only pay for 2-3 days in nicu. This includes certain more expensive expat providers e.g. Goodhealth, Axa etc. So... insured ladies, make sure you read the small print!

Its very risky - there was a case in the papers the other day when a lady delivered early with no insurance and ended up owing the hospital in excess of 250,000 aed. she was here on holiday from India visiting her husband, she had an accident and died during the childbirth. The baby spent time in NICU but was bailed out by kind donations. It was a case of v bad luck and everything stacked against them. She slipped and fell - hardly very bad luck and having things stacked against them. She was not full term, slipped, fell and DIED, her baby came early and required a long hospital stay - pretty bad luck if you ask me. I think you are deliberately misunderstanding - the point being this can happen to anyone - and if you have no insurance it can land you in a lot of date. Anyone can slip and fall, it's not bad luck nor having things stacked against you. Yes the outcome was horrific.

One thing is for certain. Being pregnant here without maternity insurance is a big risk. Most likely, nothing will go wrong, but if it does, then you will be left with a huge bill and will probably become a newspaper charity case unless you are extremely wealthy...
