Anyone have tips in introducing a pacifier to a BF 3wk old? I've been at it 3 days now and no luck...I've tried avent, TT and Nuk brands.

DD takes one lick and looks at me like, Forget it!

I've tried to fake her out just after a feed - no luck there either.

Thoughts?

I was insistent on not giving my DD a dummy but a 12 weeks when the thumb went in, I pulled it out and replaced it with a dummy. Even at that age when she was a well established BFeeder she still took some perserverence to get the dummy to stay in. Eventually she got it and the thumb didnt go back in. Now shes 17 months old, I took the dummy of her 8 weeks ago and shes great without it. Success story all round. And learned a valuable lesson not to be insistent that I won't be doing something until I'm in the situation! yes exactly! a friend was telling me for her older girl she used the dummy and at about 1.5 years, she tossed them all and that was the end of it. for her younger daughter they let her have her thumb and now, at nearly 6 yrs old she's still sucking away. i prefer the former. They really are good for settling them when they are little, and save a lot of sleepless nights. I got rid of DDs because she was getting to the point where she could talk, would ask for it all the time, cry when she didnt have it and would talk with it still in her mouth which I hate. I was terrified about taking it away as I thought it would just be chaos and floods of tears, but after one night or rocking, shhhhushing and cuddles, she forgot about it. I think I was more scared of taking it away than she was :)

i knew someone would question why i wanted to use one! :) its a trial - if its works I'll be a happier mommy. and if doesnt, well, my arms will look great from all the cradling and feeding ive been doing. hehe - it's always worth asking! Some people seem to think that all babies need a dummy (or act as if it's the case) and I've seen some forcing the thing into their babies mouth and the baby spits it straight out, rince and repeat until the mum is actually holding it in despite the baby squirming and still trying to spit it out... at which point I can't help thinking "get the friggin' message!" Anyhow, as I said, neither of my two wanted dummies, but DS needed to suck in order to self-soothe, so we encouraged him to suck on the arms of a favourite toy. Far more gross than a dummy, tbh, but hey, whatever works! We now have 3 identical toys to get a decent rotation in the washer! ... and if all else fails, then yes, 3 weeks is still really, really young to expect them to be independent. You'll see over the next few months an enormous change anyway, so what you find yourself having to do now will almost certainly be different from what you'll be doing in 6 months. ... and you no longer need to go to the gym!

With my first my sister took over an forced it on him by gently just holding it in his mouth dispite him trying to spit it out. Once he got the hang of it, our lives changed. His reflux got better and he was a far more content baby. This was at about 6 weeks and I was BF. With DS 2 (who also had mild reflux) I gave it to him at 2 days old. He took it straight away and has never had any struggles with BF. He's less of a dummy baby then his older brother was, so I am going to try take it away from him earlier.

She's only 3 weeks old. Hard to expect her to self soothe. My DD never took to it despite quite a few attempts. I'm glad to be honest find them a bit vile myself. Still I get why people use them.

try putting it in her mouth when she is sleepy. For such tiny little things they sure are smart!

actually DD has been latching from minute one and, touch wood, we've had zero BF issues. I've been told by my midwife that im ok to use the dummy since a) the above, and b) DD is having issues self-soothing. i knew someone would question why i wanted to use one! :) its a trial - if its works I'll be a happier mommy. and if doesnt, well, my arms will look great from all the cradling and feeding ive been doing. just curious if there is some trick im unaware of? otherwise, i'll just keep popping it in every now and then to see if something finally clicks. or i accept defeat. ;) edited by DC2DXB on 07/04/2011

no, never managed with either of my two and in fact, it's not recommended for bf babies until breastfeeding is well established - so not for 6-8 weeks. May I ask why you are so set on using a dummy? They are by no means an obligatory baby item and it's a bit of a subtle hint that your DD doesn't want or need it! edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 07/04/2011
